How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipFor Baffin region businesses, go directly to BBDC in Iqaluit (867-979-1303) rather than trying to navigate EDT centrally — BBDC has a five-person team that can guide applications hands-on. Emphasize job creation and community benefit in your application narrative, as these are explicit criteria. Ask about combining SBSP with a Community Futures loan from BBDC's own investment fund (up to $250,000) to build a complete financing package.
Rejection Pitfalls 6
- Outstanding financial or contractual obligations with the Government of Nunavut Department of Economic Development and Transportation
- Business not majority-owned by Nunavut residents
- Business located outside the Baffin/Qikiqtaaluk region (would need to apply through KBDC or KCFI instead)
Success Profile
A Nunavut-resident-owned small business in the Baffin region with fewer than 10 employees or under $500,000 in annual revenue, seeking startup capital, training support, minor equipment, or market development assistance. Tourism operators, arts and crafts businesses, harvesters, and retail businesses are frequently cited as ideal applicants. Projects that create local jobs or replace a service not previously available in the community are prioritized.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications assessed on commercial viability, community benefit (job creation, revenue growth), number of employees and revenue level (must be under $500K / fewer than 10 employees), and applicant standing with the Government of Nunavut. No competitive scoring rubric — eligibility review-based.
