How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

Don't apply to NRCan directly — you apply through one of 11 delivery organizations, each specializing in a different sector. ECO Canada covers environmental careers broadly, BioTalent covers biotech/life sciences, Electricity HR Canada covers utilities, Mining Industry HR Council covers mining, and Colleges and Institutes Canada (Career Launcher) covers a broad range through college partnerships. Pick the delivery partner closest to your sector for best results. Apply in April-May when the new fiscal year's allocation is fresh. The 50% equity group target means employers hiring women, Indigenous youth, visible minorities, or youth with disabilities are prioritized.

Rejection Pitfalls 8

  • Organization is not in the natural resources sector (energy, forestry, mining, earth sciences, clean technology)
  • Position does not involve meaningful skills development or green economy work
  • No supervisor or mentor identified for the intern

Success Profile

A small-to-medium business or non-profit in the natural resources sector (energy, mining, forestry, earth sciences, clean technology) looking to hire a young person (15-30) for a meaningful 6-12 month position. Successful employers have a clear training plan, a named supervisor/mentor, and a position that genuinely contributes to green economy work. Organizations in rural, remote, northern, or Indigenous communities are prioritized. The position must be incremental — it cannot replace an existing job or one the employer would have created regardless. Employers with previous STIP placements have a track record advantage with delivery partners.

Proof of legal entity incorporated or registered in Canada
Position description demonstrating connection to natural resources sector (energy, forestry, mining, earth sciences, clean technology)
Training plan for the intern showing meaningful skills development
Supervisor/mentor identified for the intern

Deadline Notes

There is no fixed deadline for employer applications. Employers contact a delivery organization (e.g., ECO Canada, BioTalent Canada, Colleges and Institutes Canada) and apply through that partner. Funding is allocated annually — $14.2M for 2025-26, with extension opportunities into 2026-27 and 2027-28. Apply early in the fiscal year (April-May) before delivery partners exhaust their allocations. Some delivery partners run their own intake windows.
