How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipThis is a lottery, not a merit competition — every eligible applicant has an equal statistical chance. Apply even if your business is brand new or very small. The key is simply submitting a complete application during the ~30-day June window. Stack this with your regional NACCA IWE program application for access to up to $50K in additional financing through Indigenous Financial Institutions.
Rejection Pitfalls 6
- Business not at least 51% owned and controlled by an Indigenous woman
- Business not registered as a for-profit entity in Canada
- Applicant was a recipient in the immediately prior year's IWEF cycle
Success Profile
Indigenous women-owned for-profit businesses at any stage (startup through growth). Sole proprietors and micro-businesses are well-represented among recipients. Industries include retail, food/beverage, crafts, creative, health/wellness, and services. Geographic distribution is national — remote and northern community businesses have received awards. No revenue minimum or minimum operating history required.
Evaluation Criteria
No merit-based evaluation. Selection is by random lottery draw from all eligible applicants. The only assessment is a pass/fail eligibility check: 51%+ Indigenous women's ownership, for-profit registration in Canada, and not a prior-year recipient.
