Program Description

AICTD is a federal initiative jointly led by the Trade Commissioner Service, NRC IRAP and ISED that helps Canadian clean-technology SMEs showcase and deploy their technologies across the Indo-Pacific. It offers two things: places on small, highly targeted trade missions organized by Trade Commissioners in the region, with matchmaking to potential international partners; and a route to funding through the separate NRC IRAP International Technology Pilot & Demonstration (ITPD) program for cleantech pilot and demonstration projects with foreign partners. AICTD itself publishes no funding amount, no eligibility criteria and no deadline, and the ITPD call it links to is labelled a previous call. Future missions and funding opportunities are announced through its mailing list.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a Canadian small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) — the initiative describes itself as helping SMEs showcase and deploy their clean technologies
  • Work in clean technology — the program covers all enabling technologies that improve efficiency, reduce waste, and have a demonstrable economic, environmental or GHG impact across broad industrial sectors, and names clean energy and energy efficiency, carbon management, environmental technology and the circular economy as examples rather than an exhaustive list
  • Target the Indo-Pacific region — AICTD is a key part of Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy and its missions go to key Indo-Pacific markets
  • For the funding route, have a partnership project with a foreign partner — the initiative describes cleantech pilot and demonstration projects with foreign partners in international markets, and collaboration with local contacts in Indo-Pacific markets to test, demonstrate and scale
  • For the funding route, the partnership project must focus on one or more of: technology piloting; demonstration; validation; or adaptation of a cleantech product, process or service
  • ⚠ AICTD publishes NO further eligibility criteria of its own. Funding eligibility is set by the separate NRC IRAP International Technology Pilot & Demonstration program in each of its calls, and those criteria — including any incorporation, employee-count, cost-share or project-duration requirements — must be read from the specific ITPD call that is open at the time you apply. They are not published on the AICTD page and should not be assumed from a previous call

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about AICTD

Free
How much funding can I get through AICTD?
AICTD publishes no funding amount. It is a missions and matchmaking initiative that also signposts NRC IRAP's separate International Technology Pilot & Demonstration program, whose maximum is set per call and has differed between calls. Read the figure from the ITPD call that is actually open.
Is there an open call I can apply to right now?
Not on the AICTD page. The ITPD funding call it links to is labelled a previous call, and no AICTD mission dates are published. The stated route in is to subscribe to the mailing list for notifications of upcoming missions and funding opportunities.
What do I actually receive from an AICTD mission?
Not money. You receive guidance from Trade Commissioners who understand local technology needs, tailored matchmaking with international partners, and mission programming such as policy briefings, market insights, site visits and networking with key stakeholders. Missions are described as focused and small-scale, and participants are selected.
What kind of cleantech projects does the funding route cover?
Partnership projects focused on one or more of technology piloting, demonstration, validation, or adaptation of a cleantech product, process or service. The program applies to enabling technologies that improve efficiency, reduce waste and have a demonstrable economic, environmental or GHG impact — examples given include clean energy and energy efficiency, carbon management, environmental technology and the circular economy.
Who runs AICTD and how do I reach them?
It is jointly led by the Trade Commissioner Service, the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. Missions are facilitated by two AICTD Regional Trade Commissioners based in Seoul and Sydney. The published contact is [email protected].
