Program Description
The AI Compute Challenge provides up to $700 million in federal contributions to support commercially viable AI data centre projects that strengthen Canada's AI ecosystem. Funding prioritizes projects that build or expand AI compute capacity in Canada, offer affordable compute to Canadian firms, anchor Canadian AI champions, and use sustainable energy and Canadian-made AI hardware or software. The program operates under Canada's Sovereign AI Compute Strategy and prioritizes projects ready for immediate implementation.
Eligibility Requirements
- Commercial entity, industry consortium, or partnership between industry and academia
- Meaningful Canadian industry participation required in the project
- Project must be a commercially viable AI compute infrastructure initiative (e.g., AI data centre, compute cluster)
- Able to demonstrate maximization of both private and public funding, including significant provincial or territorial co-investment
- Funding prioritizes projects that add AI compute capacity in Canada, offer affordable compute to Canadian firms, anchor Canadian AI champions, or use sustainable energy and Canadian-made hardware or software
- Incorporates Canadian-made AI compute hardware or software (preferred)
- Project is ready for near-term commercial deployment
- Eligible recipients: corporations incorporated in Canada (or by Royal Charter) and general or limited partnerships established under Canadian law, carrying on business in Canada
