How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

CSA funding is AO-driven — you cannot apply year-round. Set alerts on the CSA funding opportunities page. The STDP Small Business stream (AO 10.2, 50 or fewer employees) has the least competition and is specifically carved out for SMEs. 17 of 18 companies funded in the latest STDP round were SMEs. Attend CSA Industry Days and the Canadian Space Summit to understand upcoming priority areas before AOs are published — proposals aligned with stated CSA priorities (currently: lunar tech, Earth observation AI, quantum communications, space sustainability) score significantly higher.

Rejection Pitfalls 10

  • Technology not aligned with CSA priority areas published in the AO
  • Insufficient technical rigor — no clear TRL advancement path or vague work breakdown
  • Poor risk identification — failure to identify top risks or missing mitigation strategies

Success Profile

Canadian incorporated for-profit company (SME preferred, 50 or fewer employees ideal for AO 10.2) developing space technology with clear commercial potential and a 2-5 year path to market. Strong technical team with relevant space industry experience. Previous CSA or space-sector project delivery track record is a significant advantage. Active in the Canadian space ecosystem (conferences, CSA industry days). Technology at TRL 3-4 targeting advancement to TRL 5-6.

Evaluation Criteria

Scored on Project Strategy (40%) and Post-Project Strategy (60%). Project Strategy includes Innovation (novelty, state-of-art review) and Implementation (team qualifications, WBS, schedule, TRL advancement, risk ID, track record). Post-Project Strategy includes Market Assessment (market size, demand drivers, competitive analysis), Roadmap to Product Deployment (post-project R&D, commercialization timeline), Benefit to Applicant (job creation, revenue growth), and Benefit to Canadian Space Sector (spillover to other Canadian firms, spend in Canada). Minimum 70% overall with 60% thresholds per criterion.

Application Steps

1 Monitor Announcements of Opportunity Check the CSA funding opportunities page regularly. STDP operates through periodic AOs — there is no continuous intake. Sign up for CSA newsletters and attend Industry Days to learn about upcoming calls.
2 Register Intent When an AO opens, register via the CSA Registration Portal using the format 'STDP AO#_Organization Name_Short Project Title' by the registration deadline. Late registrations are rejected without exception.
3 Prepare Application Package Compile a single combined PDF including signed application form, team member resumes (max 2 pages each), proof of incorporation, partner letters, signed confidentiality declaration, and provincial authorization forms (M-30 for Quebec, Bill-18 for Alberta) if applicable.
