Program Description
Wage subsidy for employers hiring a clean tech intern: up to $30,000 covering 80% of the intern's salary, training and wrap-around service costs, with the employer required to cover the remaining 20%. Delivered by CICan's Career Launcher on behalf of Environment and Climate Change Canada's Science Horizons Youth Internship Program.
Eligibility Requirements
- Employer must be a Canadian company or subsidiary and one of: SME (<500 employees), large corporation (500+), NGO, not-for-profit, Indigenous organization, post-secondary institution, municipal/local government, or provincial/territorial government, institution, agency or Crown corporation
- Employer must have an established payroll system and be set up to receive payments by direct deposit
- Employer must have a process for supervising and mentoring interns
- Employer must cover 20% of the total internship cost
- Intern must be a post-secondary graduate aged 15-30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship
- Intern must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee status in Canada
- Internship must be a STEM-field clean tech or environment-related position, minimum 30 hrs/week, 4-11 months
- Position must be net-new: cannot be a currently filled position, replace an employee on leave, or move a current employee into a new position
- Cannot be combined with a Science Horizons Youth Internship grant from another delivery partner
- Intern cannot be a previous Science Horizons participant

How much of the intern's cost does this actually cover?
Up to 80%. Employers hiring job-ready youth can receive up to $20,000; hiring youth facing barriers to employment raises that to up to $25,000. Up to $5,000 more covers pre-approved training and wrap-around services, to a $30,000 combined maximum.
Can I stack this with other government funding?
Stacking of other federal funding is allowed up to 100% of the intern's salary, but the employer's own 20% contribution to total internship cost still applies. You cannot stack funding from another Youth Employment and Skills Strategy program — CICan treats that as double dipping — or take a Science Horizons grant from a second delivery partner for the same position.
When does the subsidy money actually reach me?
By direct deposit on a reimbursement basis, in two instalments: one at the internship midterm and one at the end. Each is released only after the employer and intern reports, paystubs and any training receipts are submitted and reviewed.
Is the wage subsidy taxable for my business?
Yes. CICan states the subsidy is taxable and points to CRA guidance that a government grant or subsidy must be reported as income or as a reduction of an expense — a business receiving an employment grant generally deducts it from the wage expense it claims.
