Application Steps

1 Select Site and Stream Choose a CDL site (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Halifax, or international) and the most relevant innovation stream (AI, Climate, Health, Quantum, Space, Defence, Fintech, etc.). Each site-stream combination has its own mentor network — choose strategically based on your technology and investor targets.
2 Application Triage Visit creativedestructionlab.com to confirm the current application window (annual cycle: applications open ~April–July, program starts October). Complete the online application including company description, technical innovation summary, team profiles, stream selection, and fundraising targets.
3 Technical and Business Screening CDL admissions team screens for technical innovation depth, venture scalability, and team capability. Late applications by invitation only — if window is closed, email [email protected] to express interest for the next cycle.
4 Cohort Announcement and Onboarding Accepted companies are announced ~September/October. Onboarding brief prepares founders for the first full-day session, objective-setting methodology, and mentor engagement expectations.
5 Five Sessions Over Nine Months Attend 5 intensive full-day sessions every ~8 weeks. At each session, set new objectives with mentor panel, present progress from prior objectives, and engage with potential investors. Companies failing to meet objectives may be removed — this accountability is core to the CDL model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about CDL

Free
Is CDL a cash grant or just mentorship?
No cash from CDL — it's entirely in-kind. Value comes from mentorship, investor introductions, and milestone-driven accountability. Mentors may invest independently (not guaranteed).
What's the typical company profile that gets accepted?
Seed-stage deep tech/science company with strong technical team, scalable model, and willingness to commit to 9-month program. Not for lifestyle businesses or non-scalable ventures.
Can I apply if I'm not incorporated yet?
Yes, but you must have a legal entity (e.g., sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation) to apply. CDL requires a formal business structure.
How long does the program run?
Annual cycle: apply ~July, program runs October-June. Requires 9-month commitment with quarterly milestones — not a short-term program.
Can I stack CDL with other grants?
Yes — CDL is compatible with IRAP, SR&ED, Ontario Innovation Tax Credit, and CanExport. Many CDL companies use these alongside CDL for funding.
