How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

The ENCQOR iPaaS testbed is a key differentiator — your application must articulate specifically HOW your technology will use the testbed. Vague proposals about '5G connectivity' without testbed integration details are typically declined. If your project has a public-sector collaborator (e.g., a hospital or municipality), frame the application around joint benefit — these collaborations score well. Consider the larger ENCQOR 5G SME Technology Development Program ($500K) if your project is more complex.

Premium See what trips up most applicants for this program — and how to avoid it.

Rejection Pitfalls 5

  • Project does not require or integrate with the ENCQOR iPaaS 5G testbed
  • SME has more than 500 employees or fewer than 50% Ontario-based employees
  • Technology is already commercial (beyond TRL 8) — program is for pre-commercial development

Success Profile

An Ontario tech SME (under 500 employees) with a commercially ready 5G use case — smart manufacturing sensors, remote patient monitoring, connected vehicle systems, or smart city applications — that needs access to a live 5G testbed to validate performance before commercialization.

Premium See what successful applicants for this program actually look like.

Evaluation Criteria

OCI assesses applications on: (1) clarity and feasibility of the 5G use case and testbed integration plan; (2) commercial potential — market size, competitive differentiation, and likelihood of commercialization; (3) economic benefit to Ontario — job creation, IP generated in Ontario; (4) SME financial capacity to contribute the 50% co-funding; (5) innovation level — projects addressing novel 5G applications score higher than incremental adaptations.

Clawback Risk

Low Risk

Clawback applies if project activities are not completed as approved, reporting obligations are not met, or OCI determines funding was used for ineligible expenses. Risk is low given the small grant size and testbed-specific scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about ENCQOR 5G Demonstration Program — Ontario

Free
What is the ENCQOR 5G iPaaS testbed?
It is a live 5G Innovation Platform as a Service (iPaaS) testbed available to Ontario SMEs for testing 5G-enabled applications, products, and services in a real network environment — without needing to build their own 5G infrastructure.
Is my company too large to apply?
If you have 500 or more employees, you do not qualify. The program is strictly for SMEs with fewer than 500 Ontario-based employees.
Can a startup apply if it has no revenue yet?
Yes — there is no minimum revenue requirement. Startups with a viable 5G product idea and credible testbed plan are eligible.
How does this differ from the ENCQOR 5G Technology Development (SME) Program?
The Demonstration Program is smaller ($50K max, 50% cost-share) and standalone — no anchor firm partner needed. The Tech Dev Program is larger ($500K max, 100% eligible costs) but requires mandatory partnership with Ericsson, Ciena, or Thales.
Are capital equipment purchases eligible?
Only equipment and materials directly required for testbed testing activities are eligible. General capital purchases are not covered.
