Program Description
Supports commercialization and adoption of AI solutions in Northern Ontario through repayable contributions for for-profit SMEs and non-repayable contributions for not-for-profits, with project benefits accruing to Northern Ontario.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be an eligible legal entity: incorporated SME, incorporated not-for-profit, Indigenous community/organization, or municipality/municipal organization
- Project must commercialize or adopt AI solutions
- Project benefits must accrue to Northern Ontario
- Retail and service-based businesses are not eligible
- Normally requires a sustainable business model supported by two years of operations
- Commercialization projects must be at Technology Readiness Level 7 or higher
- For-profit applicants must have financial capacity to complete the project and repay the contribution
- Total government funding cannot exceed 50% of eligible capital costs or 75% of other eligible costs

Do I have to pay this money back?
If you are a for profit business, normally yes. Contributions to for profit organizations are repayable, with repayment terms determined during the development of the contribution agreement. Contributions to not for profit organizations are normally non repayable.
How much of my project cost is covered?
For a for profit applicant, up to 50% of capital costs and up to 75% of non capital costs. All government funding combined cannot exceed those same limits.
How large a contribution can I ask for?
FedNor does not publish a dollar range for this program. The actual contribution amount is based on the minimum amount required to carry out the project.
Who cannot apply?
Retail and service based businesses will not be considered. Eligible applicants are incorporated SMEs, incorporated not for profits, Indigenous communities and organizations, and municipalities and municipal organizations, and all of them must be legal entities capable of entering into legally binding agreements.
Can I claim money I have already spent?
Possibly. Costs may be eligible on a retroactive basis for the 12 month period before FedNor receives your application, but no earlier than April 16, 2024. Costs you legally committed to before the eligibility date are not eligible.
Is there a deadline?
No. Applications are assessed as they are received, and approval may also depend on funding availability.
