How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

Apply before the trade show — retroactive applications are not accepted. The 75% reimbursement for exhibitors is one of the most generous provincial trade show support rates in Canada. The 2-in-5-years rule for specific shows encourages diversification — use it strategically to explore new markets rather than returning to the same show annually. Combine with federal CanExport for the same trade show to cover nearly all costs. The Incoming Buyer stream ($5,000) is underutilized and excellent for hosting foreign buyers at your Manitoba facility.

Success Profile

Manitoba manufacturers, food processors, agricultural exporters, and technology companies expanding into international markets. Companies attending major industry trade shows for the first time see the highest ROI. Businesses in the $1M-$20M annual sales range get the most relative benefit. Active exporters building systematic international market development plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about EDP

Free
Can I apply for the same trade show more than once?
No — you can only attend a specific show up to 2 times in 5 years. The program encourages exploring new markets rather than reusing the same event annually. Apply before the event to avoid rejection.
What's the realistic reimbursement amount?
Exhibitors get 75% of costs (up to $20,000 total), attendees get 50%. For a $5,000 booth, you'd get $3,750. The $5,000 incoming buyer program is separate and underutilized.
Do I need to be incorporated to apply?
No — sole proprietors qualify if they meet the $30,000-$50M sales threshold and are Manitoba-based. The program explicitly includes sole proprietorships in eligibility.
How long does approval take?
Applications are processed within 4-6 weeks after submission. Submit before the event to avoid delays — retroactive applications are rejected.
Can I stack this with CanExport?
Yes — CanExport SME (up to $50k/year) and Manitoba EDP can fund different activities in the same year. For example, EDP covers trade show costs, CanExport covers market research.
