How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

The BFP grant component (35-75% non-repayable) is one of the most generous Indigenous business grants in Ontario — but it's ONLY available alongside an NADF loan. Start with the Business Support Officer; they help structure the full financing package. Don't apply for the grant alone — it doesn't exist as a standalone product.

Evaluation Criteria

Application Steps

1 Initial Consultation with Business Support Officer Contact NADF at 807-623-5397 or nadf.org to book an appointment with a Business Support Officer. This consultation is mandatory before submitting any application. The officer explains the full BFP structure, assesses preliminary eligibility, and guides business plan development.
2 Confirm Eligibility and Territory Verify that you self-identify as Indigenous, your business is majority Indigenous-owned, and it is located within NAN territory (Treaty 9, Treaty 3, Robinson-Superior 1850, or Ontario portion of Treaty 5).
3 Develop Your Business Plan Prepare a complete business plan with market analysis, operations plan, management team, and financial projections. NADF Business Support Officers provide free business planning assistance — this support substantially improves application outcomes.
4 Prepare Equity Contribution Documentation The BFP requires an equity contribution (typically 10-25% of total project costs). Document your equity source — personal savings, assets, or other contributions. This demonstrates financial commitment to the project.
5 Submit Application for Screening Committee Review Your Business Support Officer submits your application to NADF's Screening Committee. Possible outcomes: Proceed (meets criteria — full assessment begins), Deferred (more information needed), or Declined (does not meet guidelines).
6 Full Business Plan Assessment An Account Manager conducts an in-depth evaluation of your business plan and financial viability. Timeline varies based on project complexity and completeness of your application.
7 Receive Financing Decision NADF provides a decision on the complete financing package — the non-repayable grant component (35-75% of eligible costs) paired with the developmental loan, presented together as one package.
8 Sign Contribution Agreement and Loan Documents Execute both the contribution agreement (grant component) and the loan agreement. Review the grant percentage, eligible cost categories, reporting requirements, and loan repayment schedule carefully.
9 Receive Disbursement and Begin Project Grant and loan funds are disbursed as an advance at project start. Maintain records of all eligible costs for reporting purposes. Regular check-ins with your NADF Account Manager are expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about NADF

Free
Can I apply for the grant alone?
No — the grant is only available when paired with an NADF developmental loan. The program requires simultaneous application for both components; standalone grant applications are rejected.
What's the realistic grant amount for my business?
Individuals: up to $99,999 (35-75% of eligible costs). Community-owned: up to $249,999. But must be paired with an NADF loan — total package can exceed these limits.
Do I need to be incorporated to qualify?
No — sole proprietors (Indigenous individuals) qualify. However, the business must be majority Indigenous-owned and controlled, and located within Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory.
What's the #1 reason for rejection?
Applying for the grant-only without securing an NADF loan first. The program requires both components to be applied for together.
Can I stack this with other grants?
Yes — compatible with IRAP, FedNor, Ontario Aboriginal Loan Program, and Futurpreneur IESP. These programs can complement the NADF loan and BFP grant for a larger financing package.
