What this program funds and who can apply
Program Description
Co-funds collaborative research between Canadian university researchers and industry partners at a 2:1 ratio — NSERC contributes $2 for every $1 of partner cash. The Advantage track is partner-driven, supporting applied research projects aligned with the partner organization's goals. Businesses gain access to university labs, graduate students, and specialized expertise while NSERC covers up to 66.7% of direct research costs. Rolling intake with no deadlines; projects range from $20K to $1M per year for 1-5 years.

How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipThe business does NOT apply — the university researcher submits the application. Your job as the industry partner is to find the right faculty member, co-develop the research problem, and commit cash. The 2:1 ratio is exceptional: every $1 of your cash unlocks $2 of NSERC funding plus in-kind university resources. For SMEs, ask the university partner about the ECR voucher pilot — a $10,000 NSERC voucher replaces your entire cash contribution for a $30,000 starter project. Small grants under $75K/year get faster internal review (5-9 weeks). Start by contacting the Industry Liaison Office at your nearest university.
Rejection Pitfalls 6
- Project lacks genuine scientific or engineering research content — routine testing or consulting does not qualify
- No eligible partner organization with committed cash contributions
- Missing National Security Risk Assessment Form for private-sector partners
Success Profile
Canadian company with a genuine R&D challenge in natural sciences or engineering that benefits from academic expertise. University researcher leads the application with industry partner committed to cash and active participation. Ideal: SME with 5-100 employees, operating 2+ years, able to commit $25K-$100K/year in cash.
Evaluation Criteria
Four equally weighted merit indicators: (1) Partnership quality — partner capacity, commitment, and genuine involvement beyond funding; (2) Research plan — clarity of objectives, methodology, team expertise, and feasibility; (3) Training — quality of HQP (Highly Qualified Personnel) development plan with EDI considerations for diverse trainee participation; (4) Innovation potential — expected societal, economic, and environmental benefits for Canada. Weak training plans are a frequently cited rejection reason.
