Program Description

OCI's Ready for Market (R4M) Co-Investment Fund invests directly in academic-affiliated Ontario companies at the pre-seed and seed stage, with investments of up to $250,000 into rounds totalling $500,000 to $2 million. It co-invests rather than leads: private-sector co-investment is required and Ontario-based accredited investors should be part of the round. Applicants must be incorporated for no more than five years (Ontario or Canadian for-profit incorporation) with principal operations in Ontario, and the fund applies a minimum addressable market size of $100M. It is sector-agnostic — IT, robotics, AI, cleantech, advanced manufacturing and others — but excludes human health and life sciences technologies, which go to the Life Sciences Innovation Fund.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be incorporated for no more than five years, with Ontario or Canadian for-profit incorporation, and have principal operations in Ontario
  • Current company headcount must be more than 50% located in Ontario (not projected)
  • Must be academic affiliated: intellectual property from an Ontario-based academic institution, or part of a campus incubator/accelerator at an academic institution — companies whose team or IP originates at a university, college or research hospital are also eligible even if not campus affiliated
  • Must meet a minimum addressable market size of $100 million
  • Private-sector co-investment is required — R4M co-invests and does not lead, and Ontario-based accredited investors should be part of the investment round
  • Must be seeking to raise pre-seed or seed investment, with total round sizes ranging from $500,000 to $2 million
  • Must not have raised more than $1 million in prior third-party capital
  • Sector-agnostic including IT, robotics, AI, cleantech and advanced manufacturing — but excludes human health and life sciences technologies, which are directed to the Life Sciences Innovation Fund (LSIF)
  • Must be willing to engage with OCI's business development support alongside capital

Insider Tip

R4M functions as a co-investor, not a grant body — prepare for it like a VC pitch, and do not approach it until your round is taking shape: private-sector co-investment is a stated requirement and OCI expects Ontario-based accredited investors in the round, so a founder without investors assembled cannot use this fund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about OCI Ready 4 Market Fund

Free
Is this a grant or equity investment?
OCI provides equity, not a grant. They take 10–25% ownership in your company for their $100K–$250K investment. You must raise a total pre-seed round of $500K–$2M.
What if my company is in life sciences?
R4M redirects life sciences applicants to LSIF. OCI's investment team will explicitly reject your application if you're in human health or life sciences, and the exclusion is mutual and permanent between the two funds.
Do I need an academic connection?
Yes. R4M describes itself as investing in academic-affiliated Ontario companies. You qualify through IP from an Ontario-based academic institution, membership in a campus incubator or accelerator at an academic institution, or team/IP origins at a university, college or research hospital — that last route works even if you are not campus affiliated.
Can I apply if I'm not based in Ontario?
No — you must be incorporated in Ontario or Canada as a for-profit, have principal operations in Ontario, and have more than 50% of current headcount located in Ontario (not projected).
What's the minimum round size I need to have lined up?
You must be raising a pre-seed or seed round of $500K–$2M, and private-sector co-investment is required — OCI co-invests alongside private investors rather than leading, and Ontario-based accredited investors should be part of the round. Your addressable market also needs to be at least $100M.
