Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about PEI Food Product Development Assistance

Free
Do I need to be incorporated to apply?
No. The requirement is to be registered to do business and actively operating in PEI — Innovation PEI's application form accepts sole proprietorships and partnerships alongside incorporated businesses.
How much can one business receive?
50% of project costs to a maximum of $50,000 per business. You can submit multiple projects, but the maximum approved to one business in any twelve-month period will not exceed $50,000.
Can I combine this with other government funding?
Yes, up to a ceiling: combined project funding from all non-repayable government sources cannot exceed 75% of eligible costs. Other assistance is also weighed when your application is evaluated.
Can I apply after the project has started?
No. Innovation PEI is explicit: an application must be submitted before any financial or legal commitment is made on the project. Committing early puts those costs outside the program.
What kinds of costs does it actually cover?
Product and prototype development, technical feasibility and new process development, test-market production runs, technical assessment of processing and packaging lines, shelf-life, food safety and sensory analysis, supplier sourcing, and technical training of plant staff.
