Program Description
Cost-share funding for farmers adopting beneficial management practices (BMPs) that improve climate resilience, sequester carbon, and protect water quality. Covers 30-100% of costs for establishing grasslands, reducing tillage, planting trees, water retention, wetland management. $250M over 2023-2028 under Sustainable CAP, delivered through provincial agricultural ministries.
Eligibility Requirements
- Primary agricultural producers on Canadian agricultural land
- Must meet province-specific minimum gross farm income thresholds ($50,000 in Saskatchewan). A Saskatchewan new entrant earning less can still qualify if a recent significant investment in land, livestock or other farming assets will bring gross farm income to $50,000 by February 29, 2028
- Must meet the environmental requirement of the province delivering RALP: Saskatchewan requires an attestation of having reviewed the Agri-Environmental Risk Assessment, while Alberta and several other provinces require an Environmental Farm Plan (obtained or in progress)
- Pre-approval required before starting most projects
- In Saskatchewan, First Nation Bands are eligible applicants; Crown Land Pasture Associations are eligible for the Land Use, Grazing Management and Sulphate Water Treatment BMPs only
- In Saskatchewan, an individual applicant must be a Saskatchewan resident aged 18 or older, and a First Nation applicant must have reserve land in Saskatchewan

Meet your province's environmental requirement The requirement is province-specific. In Saskatchewan you must review the Agri-Environmental Risk Assessment before beginning your project, which is a condition of accessing program funding. In Alberta and several other provinces you must complete or update an Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) through your provincial agriculture ministry or soil and crop association, which can take several weeks. Confirm which applies to you before you start.
