How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

Contact your regional Economic Development Officer (EDO) before completing the application — this is strongly recommended by ITI and effectively expected. EDOs can help shape the project scope to match eligible cost categories and flag whether the regional budget is still available for the year. Equity requirements (20-30% matching) can be partially satisfied with sweat equity (documented labour), which helps applicants with limited cash. If applying for emergency or business relief operational support, equity requirements may be waived entirely.

Rejection Pitfalls 7

  • Insufficient or no equity contribution (matching requirement not met)
  • Incomplete application or missing required documents
  • Project does not fall within eligible cost categories

Success Profile

A registered NWT for-profit business or entrepreneur with a clearly defined project (startup, expansion, or market development), demonstrated financial need, and 20-30% matching funds available (cash or documented sweat equity). Projects showing direct community economic benefit and alignment with the GNWT's economic diversification priorities — especially outside of Yellowknife — tend to fare well. Applicants with prior relationship with their regional EDO have an advantage.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications reviewed by Regional Superintendent after EDO pre-screening. Assessed on: financial need, viability of the project, relevance to eligible cost categories, quality of quotes and budget documentation, matching contribution adequacy, and applicant experience. Community economic benefit and alignment with GNWT economic diversification priorities are positive factors.

8 Sign contribution agreement If approved, sign contribution agreement. Advance payment (typically 50%+) released on signing.
9 Implement project and submit final report Complete project, collect receipts. Submit final report with receipts within 30-60 days of project completion. Final payment released after review.
