Program Description

Provides financial support for projects that develop new, or enhance existing, tourism products in Manitoba's Interlake region, with a focus on culture, heritage, and nature-based recreation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a local government, First Nation government, community organization, community development organization, festival group, rural or northern destination marketing organization, collaborative partnership with a lead sponsor, or a small or emerging for-profit business
  • For-profit applicants must employ fewer than three (3) employees
  • Must be a member of the Interlake Tourism Association — or awaiting membership upon board approval — with the membership fee paid at the time of application
  • Project must be located in or benefit tourism in Manitoba's Interlake region
  • Project must develop a new — or enhance an existing — tourism product, travel experience or event that improves or expands the Interlake tourism sector. Preference (not a requirement) goes to five regional priorities: culture and heritage; Manitoba Indigenous tourism; trail-based and nature-based outdoor recreation; agri-tourism and culinary tourism; winter and shoulder-season tourism.
  • Total project budget must not exceed $100,000 — large-scale projects over $100,000 will not be considered
  • Dollar-for-dollar matching funding is required (50% applicant contribution)
  • Grant support covers only up to 50% of the first $4,000 in eligible costs, so the maximum grant is $2,000 regardless of total project cost
  • One grant per applicant per intake, in amounts between $500 and $2,000

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Interlake Tourism Development Fund

Free
Can sole proprietors apply?
Yes, but you must be an ITA member with the fee paid at time of application, employ fewer than three people, and provide 50% matching funds. Sole proprietors and very small operators are common recipients.
What's the typical award amount?
Grants run from $500 to $2,000, and most awards are $1,500-$2,000. Capital costs are capped at $1,000. Grant support covers up to 50% of the first $4,000 in eligible costs, so no grant exceeds $2,000 no matter how large the project.
Is there a maximum project size?
Yes. Projects with total budgets over $100,000 will not be considered at all.
When are decisions made?
For the 2026/27 fall intake: applications are due Sep 25, 2026 and decisions follow Oct 24, 2026. The winter intake closes Feb 27, 2027 with decisions Mar 31, 2027.
Why do applications fail?
Most fail due to not being an ITA member, missing dollar-for-dollar matching, employing three or more people as a for-profit applicant, or a project not fitting the tourism development focus.
Can I use in-kind for matching?
In-kind contributions from project partners are allowable for matching purposes but may not exceed 25% of the TOTAL project cost. Volunteer time is not an eligible matching contribution unless it is provided as in-kind by a business or employer that is covering the cost of their time. Document the value of anything you claim.
