Program Description
Federal-provincial-producer cost-shared crop and livestock production insurance that compensates farmers for losses from natural hazards including drought, flood, frost, wind, disease, and pests. The federal and provincial governments share the cost of premiums with producers and co-fund program administration; no premium-subsidy percentage is published. Coverage is a chosen percentage of your own probable yield, capped federally at 90%. Coverage is a chosen percentage of your own probable yield, capped federally at 90%. Claims paid when insured production falls below the insured coverage level. Operates under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
Eligibility Requirements
- Canadian farmer or agricultural producer in any province
- Growing or producing eligible insurable commodities (crops, livestock, horticulture)
- Must enroll with the provincial AgriInsurance delivery agency before provincial enrollment deadline
- Must pay producer's share of the insurance premium
- Eligible commodities vary by province — contact provincial agency for commodity-specific coverage
- Eligibility set provincially — most commercial producers of insurable commodities are eligible. Aquaculture, forestry, peat moss, game, and cannabis are excluded. Government-funded research stations, universities, and colleges are ineligible (per AAFC guidelines). Landlords earning only rental income from crop shares are not eligible.
- The applicant must be the party actually farming. Alberta's application excludes cash-rent and crop-share landlords, mortgagers and security holders, and custom farm operators.
- Saskatchewan requires contract holders to demonstrate legal, operational and financial independence from all other producers — legal access to the land, responsibility for farming decisions with access to machinery and storage, and bearing the financial risk of loss.
