How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

Apply BEFORE you buy equipment — applications submitted before purchase lock in the incentive rate. The prescriptive program has a fixed dollar-per-unit rate for each measure type (e.g., per LED fixture, per VFD motor controller), so you can calculate your exact incentive before committing to a project. If your annual consumption exceeds 500,000 kWh, ask about the Custom Program, which offers significantly larger incentives for major energy projects. BC Hydro account managers can do a free energy assessment to identify all eligible upgrades at your facility.

Premium See what trips up most applicants for this program — and how to avoid it.

Rejection Pitfalls 5

  • Facility is served by a different utility (FortisBC, municipal utility) rather than BC Hydro
  • Equipment does not meet minimum energy efficiency specifications for the relevant measure
  • Application submitted after equipment already purchased and installed without prior notice (for some measure types)

Success Profile

Any BC Hydro commercial customer planning an equipment upgrade — restaurants replacing commercial refrigeration, retailers upgrading to LED lighting, manufacturers installing variable-speed drives, or offices replacing HVAC systems. No minimum size, no sector restrictions beyond being a BC Hydro customer.

Evaluation Criteria

Entitlement-based program — not scored or ranked. Eligibility is determined by: (1) BC Hydro customer status, (2) equipment meeting efficiency specifications, (3) project completion at a BC Hydro-served location. Custom Program projects undergo an engineering review to verify energy savings methodology.

Application Steps

1 Identify eligible upgrades Review BC Hydro's prescriptive measure list to identify qualifying equipment upgrades. Contact a BC Hydro Key Account Manager for a free energy assessment if needed.
2 Get equipment quotes Obtain quotes from licensed contractors for eligible equipment. Use the prescriptive rate schedule to calculate your expected incentive before committing.
3 Submit pre-approval application (Custom Program only) For large projects under the Custom Program, submit an application before purchasing equipment to lock in the incentive offer.
4 Purchase and install equipment Proceed with equipment purchase and installation by a qualified contractor. Retain all invoices and specification sheets.
5 Submit completion application Submit the BESI application form with installation invoices, equipment spec sheets, and your BC Hydro account number. Most prescriptive applications can be submitted online.
6 Receive incentive payment BC Hydro reviews and issues a rebate cheque or bill credit within 4–8 weeks of approval.

Required Documents 5

Completed BESI application form (online or paper)
Proof of BC Hydro account number for the installation site
Equipment specification sheets confirming energy efficiency ratings
Contractor installation invoice and confirmation of completed installation
Pre- and post-installation meter data (for Custom Program projects)

Eligible Expenses 8

  • LED lighting fixtures and controls (occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting)
  • High-efficiency HVAC equipment (air conditioning, heat pumps, ventilation)
  • Commercial refrigeration upgrades (cases, compressors, evaporator fans)
  • Variable frequency drives on electric motors
  • Electronically commutated motors
  • Energy management systems and smart controls
  • Compressed air system upgrades
  • Custom energy-saving projects (via Custom Program, for larger sites)

Ineligible Expenses 5

  • Equipment that does not meet program-specified efficiency standards
  • Residential-grade equipment installed in commercial settings
  • Natural gas equipment (covered by FortisBC, not BC Hydro)
