Eligibility & Details
What this program funds and who can apply
Program Description
30% tax credit for investors who make equity investments in registered BC small businesses (Eligible Business Corporations). The credit is refundable for individual investors, who can claim up to $300,000 in a year, and non-refundable for corporate investors, who have no annual limit and must claim in the year of investment. Budget 2025 raised the individual maximum from $120,000 to $300,000 for investments made on or after March 4, 2025.
Eligibility Requirements
- Investors investing in registered Eligible Business Corporations (EBCs) in BC
- EBCs must be BC-based small businesses meeting program criteria
- The company must have at least $25,000 of equity capital, not counting convertible rights, before it registers. That pre-registration equity is not itself eligible for tax credits
- Each investor must hold their shares or convertible right for at least five years from their own investment date, or repay the credit; the company's registration requirements run for five years after its most recent credited share issue
- Individual or corporate investors eligible
- The company, together with any affiliates, cannot have more than 100 employees at the time of an investor's initial investment under the program
- At least 75% of wages and salaries must go to employees who regularly report to work at operations in B.C. The threshold drops to 50% for companies primarily engaged in exporting goods or services outside B.C.
- The company must maintain a permanent establishment in B.C., meaning a place of business staffed by senior management who direct operations and can bind the company contractually
- The company must maintain at least 80% of its assets in B.C.
- The company must be substantially engaged in one of eight qualifying activities from registration until five years after the last credited investment: manufacturing and processing of goods produced in B.C.; a destination tourism resort, attraction or service; research and development of proprietary technology; development of an interactive digital new media product; community diversification by a company outside Metro Vancouver and the Capital Regional District; manufacturing, processing or R&D of clean technologies; advanced commercialization outside those two regions; or scale-up activities by a company already engaged in one of the other seven for two years
