Application Steps

1 Register on Dialogue Portal Create accounts on the Dialogue portal (Telefilm Canada's joint application system with CMF) at telefilm.ca. Complete your company profile and PERSONA-ID self-identification (voluntary).
2 Secure Triggering Financial Commitment Obtain a financial commitment from a Canadian broadcaster OR a Canadian distributor representing at least 15% of the project's eligible costs. This is the triggering commitment required to apply.
3 Prepare Creative Package Develop the project proposal including creative treatment, authorial vision statement (this is the highest-weighted element at 45/100), director's statement, and synopsis. The documentary must be a one-off auteur/creative POV work.
4 Assemble Financial Package Prepare detailed production budget showing all funding sources. CMF maximum is lesser of 49% of eligible costs or $400,000. Total CMF from all programs cannot exceed 84%. Include broadcaster/distributor LOI and all third-party commitments.
5 Submit Application via Dialogue The 2025-26 edition opened May 1 and closed May 27, 2025; the 2026-27 edition opened April 28 and closed May 14, 2026. Monitor cmf-fmc.ca/our-programs/program-deadlines/ each spring for the annual intake window.
6 Evaluation and Decision The 2025-26 round results were announced August 27, 2025. Results from the 2026-27 intake (closed May 14, 2026) are expected August–September 2026.
