Program Description

Quantum Leap connects Canadian SMEs and public research institutions developing drug-discovery technologies with CQDM's global pharmaceutical members. CQDM curates opportunities and structures the financial package rather than writing a cheque of its own — pharmaceutical partners fund a portion of selected projects and the applicant secures the rest.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Open to Canadian SMEs and public research institutions.
  • A project needs at least one public research centre OR one Canadian business — unlike CQDM's SynergiQc program, a business can carry the project without a public research partner.
  • Project must focus on drug-discovery technologies with potential for downstream adoption by large pharmaceutical companies.
  • Project must align with the R&D priorities of CQDM's pharmaceutical members — alignment is what attracts the partner funding.
  • Eligible expenses are those incurred by the business and/or the public research centre.
  • Pharmaceutical partners contribute a portion of the funding; the candidate is responsible for securing the remaining counterpart funding, though CQDM can help identify additional co-funding through its network of national and international partners.
  • CQDM provides no guaranteed direct funding of its own for this program — it curates opportunities, aligns partners and structures the financial package.
  • Applicants should contact CQDM staff to validate project fit before submitting.
  • A non-confidential pitch deck must accompany the application form.

Insider Tip

Read the amount field carefully before you invest time: CQDM's own program-overview table says that for Quantum Leap it 'acts as a facilitator and provides guidance in structuring the financial package, without any guaranteed direct funding.' This is a matchmaking program, not a grant — the money comes from pharmaceutical members who choose to back your project, plus counterpart funding you secure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about CQDM Quantum Leap Program

Free
How much money does CQDM actually give under Quantum Leap?
None directly. CQDM's program-overview table states that for Quantum Leap it acts as a facilitator and provides guidance in structuring the financial package, without any guaranteed direct funding. The money comes from participating pharmaceutical partners plus counterpart funding you secure.
Do I need a university partner to apply?
No. CQDM's program comparison lists Quantum Leap's required partners as one public research centre OR one Canadian business. That is the key difference from SynergiQc, which requires a Quebec public research centre and a Quebec business.
When is the next Quantum Leap submission deadline?
CQDM's English and French pages both say 'Next deadline: August 20' without naming a year, and list a predicted submission frequency of every three months. Confirm the live cycle with CQDM before planning around it.
Is my project a fit for Quantum Leap?
It fits if the drug-discovery technology aligns with the R&D priorities of CQDM's pharmaceutical members and has downstream-adoption potential. CQDM asks applicants to contact its staff to validate fit before submitting rather than judging that alone.
What happens to my intellectual property if a project is selected?
The application form asks you to propose, non-bindingly, what rights participating pharmaceutical members would receive for funding the project. If the project is selected, pharma access to the technology is negotiated as part of the research agreements.
