How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

With a 15% approval rate, this is competitive — treat your application like a business pitch. The grant requires you to demonstrate commercial viability, not just creative merit. Show clear market demand (pre-sales, publisher interest, platform commitments) and a realistic business model. Commission projects were made ineligible in 2026, so pure work-for-hire games won't qualify. Payment is 80% on approval and 20% on project completion with final report — plan cash flow accordingly. Creative Saskatchewan advisors are available for pre-application consultations ([email protected] or 306-798-9800); use this to verify eligibility and strengthen your application before the November deadline.

Rejection Pitfalls 7

  • Commission project (work created for a specific client, not for commercial sale)
  • Project also receiving SK Arts or SaskCulture funding
  • Ineligible expenses exceed 50% of total project budget

Success Profile

Saskatchewan-based indie game studios or solo developers with a clear commercial strategy — targeting specific platforms (iOS, Steam, console) with a defined target market. Studios with prior shipped titles, publisher relationships, or secured platform commitments score highest. Educational game projects with confirmed institutional partnerships also perform well. First-time developers with strong prototypes and detailed business plans can succeed in the Pre-Production stream.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are evaluated on commercial viability and market potential, project quality and innovation, feasibility of budget and timeline, business plan strength, and the applicant's track record or demonstrated capacity. Pre-Production applications emphasize prototype quality and pitch materials; Production applications require demonstrated market readiness and a completed or near-complete game.
