Program Description

A $60 million Emissions Reduction Alberta call that pays up to half the eligible cost of field pilots, commercial demonstrations and first-of-kind commercial deployments of technology for agriculture, agri-food, forestry, water treatment, land reclamation and remediation, and waste-to-value. Requests run from a $250,000 minimum to $8 million, or up to $10 million for exceptionally strong projects, and every ERA dollar must be matched at least 1:1 by private money from the applicant or partners. Almost any kind of lead applicant can apply, from farmers, processors and SMEs to municipalities, non-profits, post-secondary institutions and individuals, and the applicant need not be based in Alberta, but the project must be piloted, demonstrated or deployed in the province. Expressions of Interest are due December 16, 2026 at 5 p.m. Mountain Time; shortlisted applicants then submit a Full Project Proposal, with funding decisions planned for June 2027.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Open to all categories of lead applicant, including producers, ranchers, processors, forestry organizations, landowners, technology developers, Indigenous communities and organizations, municipalities, utilities, industrial facility owners and operators, small and medium-sized enterprises, industry associations, applied research organizations, post-secondary institutions, not-for-profit organizations, government research laboratories and individuals
  • Applicants do not have to be based in Alberta, but every project must be piloted, demonstrated or deployed in Alberta and show a clear Alberta value proposition; out-of-province applicants should identify local deployment partners
  • The project must include field testing, piloting, demonstration or first-of-kind implementation of a novel technology, system, process or practice, with enough operating time to generate performance data
  • By project completion the technology must reach field pilot, demonstration or first-of-kind commercial implementation (for example TRL 6 to 9); it may start below TRL 6 if the plan to get there is credible
  • The project must be novel and additional to business as usual; technologies proven elsewhere qualify when the project is a first-of-kind Alberta deployment, an adaptation to Alberta conditions or a new use case
  • Must deliver measurable environmental outcomes (such as GHG reductions, water savings or reuse, soil or land improvement, reclamation, reduced waste or biodiversity gains) and measurable economic outcomes, each against a stated baseline
  • ERA funding must be matched at least 1:1 with private funding from the applicant or partners; funding does not need to be secured at the EOI stage, but is typically required by the time the Contribution Agreement is signed
  • The applicant should identify the end-user need and show meaningful end-user participation or validation
  • A project that has already received ERA or Fuel Innovation Fund funding is screened out, and projects covered by other ERA programs such as SEMI or the Methane Reduction Deployment Program are out of scope
  • ERA is unlikely to fund more than one proposal from any given organization in this Call

Funding Details

Amount
$250K to $8M (50%; up to $10M if exceptional)ERA reimburses up to 50% of eligible project expenses incurred and paid by the funding recipient. The maximum request is $8 million per project, or up to $10 million for exceptionally strong projects with high leverage and strong outcomes potential; there is no maximum total project budget. The minimum request is $250,000: ERA expects most funded projects to receive at least $500,000, considers requests between $250,000 and $500,000 case by case and asks applicants in that range to discuss it with ERA first, and directs applicants needing less than $250,000 to other sources. ERA funding must be matched at least 1:1 by private funding from the applicant and partners, cash or in-kind; other federal, provincial or government funding does not count toward the match. Up to $60 million is available across the Call.

Insider Tip

Treat the $250,000 floor as a warning rather than a target: ERA says most awards will be at least $500,000 and wants applicants in the $250,000 to $500,000 range to talk to it before submitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Agriculture, Water, and Land Challenge

Free
Who can apply to the Agriculture, Water, and Land Challenge?
Almost any lead applicant: producers, ranchers, processors, forestry organizations, landowners, technology developers, SMEs, Indigenous communities and organizations, municipalities, utilities, industrial operators, industry associations, applied research organizations, post-secondary institutions, not-for-profits, government research labs and individuals. You do not need to be based in Alberta, but the project must be piloted, demonstrated or deployed in Alberta.
How much funding can a project get?
ERA covers up to 50% of eligible expenses, with a maximum request of $8 million, or up to $10 million for exceptionally strong projects. The minimum request is $250,000, and ERA expects most funded projects to receive at least $500,000. Every ERA dollar must be matched by at least one dollar of private funding.
When is the deadline?
Expressions of Interest are due December 16, 2026 at 5 p.m. Mountain Time through ERA's Grant Manager portal. Shortlisted applicants submit a Full Project Proposal in late March 2027, and funding decisions are planned for June 2027.
What kinds of projects are not eligible?
Standalone lab research, feasibility or engineering studies, market studies and roadmaps; software with no field deployment; business-as-usual or routine commercial deployments, including fully commercial biogas or landfill-gas systems; policy or protocol development; and requests that only fill a financing gap. Studies and software can be part of a larger project that ends in an eligible deployment.
Does other government funding count toward the match?
No. The 1:1 match must come from private sources, cash or in-kind. Other government funding can be part of the project and does not disqualify it, but ERA will not match it, and funding from other ERA programs cannot be combined with this Call.
Can I claim costs I incur while the application is under review?
No. ERA only contributes to costs incurred on or after the Full Project Proposal deadline, tentatively March 2027, and nothing is paid until a Contribution Agreement is signed.
