Program Description
Provides financing, mentoring and culturally relevant support to Black entrepreneurs aged 18-39.
Eligibility Requirements
- Self-identifies as Black
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada; permanent resident status must already be granted, a pending application does not qualify
- Aged 18-39 at time of application
- Business has been operating full-time for 24 months or less
- Majority Black-owned (>50%) when there are two or fewer owners, or at least 25% Black-owned when there are more than two owners
- Business is not on the funder's ineligible list (gambling and contests, night clubs and bars, adult content and dating or hookup sites, recreational tobacco and cannabis, vaping, editorial publications, firearms, vehicle and equipment sales and leasing, self-promoters, residential housing including retirement and long-term care, financial and payment services, cryptocurrency, jewellers)
- Personal taxes are filed and current
- BDC portion: you must show a minimum personal investment, typically 10% of all borrowed funds
- Revenue-generating products or services must be ready for market, not in the research and development phase
- Business must be registered and operate in Canada, with revenues deposited to a Canadian business bank account
- An age-eligible business partner appears on the loan application and is jointly responsible for the loan and its repayment, including a partner who does not self-identify as Black
- Owners holding 5 per cent or less of the business are not required to be party to the application
- A previously repaid Futurpreneur loan does not bar a new application, but the business that was funded before cannot be financed again through this program
- Financial services are excluded, but a business that gives financial advice only, with no brokering, is acceptable to the funder
