Program Description

A small relief grant from the Hastings Crossing Business Improvement Association for its own members in Vancouver. It pays up to 50% of the cost of repairing deliberate or accidental damage to a storefront, to a maximum of $750 per incident, for damage such as broken windows, broken doors, broken locks and etching on glass. Graffiti is not covered; the association asks members to contact it directly so its in-house services deal with graffiti instead. Only a current HxBIA member whose business operates from a commercial storefront with street frontage inside the HxBIA catchment area can apply, and nonprofits are eligible alongside businesses. A police report file number and proof of the damage are required, the damage must have happened on or after January 1, 2023, and no business is paid more than twice in a one year period. Claims are taken first come, first served while the fund lasts: it is financed by donations from film productions shooting in the BIA, which average roughly $7,000 to $10,000 a year.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Business must be a current member of HxBIA with a storefront within the HxBIA catchment area in Vancouver

  • Nonprofits are eligible to apply
  • Damage must have occurred on or after January 1, 2023
  • You must file a police report for the incident and provide the police report file number; the association notes the Vancouver Police non-emergency line, 604-717-3321, can be used even for an incident that happened in the past
  • Proof of damage is required: photographs of the damage, before and after, and/or a repair receipt or insurance claim
  • Compensation is limited to $750 per instance
  • The association cannot compensate any business more than twice in a calendar year, and in the case of multiple incidents a maximum of two claims will be accepted within a one year period
  • The application form must be completed with as much detail as possible
  • Graffiti is not covered by this grant; members are asked to contact the association so its in-house services arrange graffiti removal
