Program Description

HEALTHI gives Canadian life science firms $15,000 in non-dilutive funding, unlocked by a $2,500 cash match, to work with the research administration groups at Hamilton Health Sciences, The Research Institute of St. Joe's Hamilton, or a CAN Health Network health system partner. The money is paid to the hospital partner, not the firm, and buys the pre-trial protocols, budgets and documents needed to launch a clinical trial or commercialization project.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a privately incorporated Canadian life science firm (pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, digital health, biomedical technologies, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals or similar).
  • Must be working towards commercializing an innovative technology at Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6) or above.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to commercializing innovation with a clear clinical application.
  • Must be interested in undertaking a commercialization project or clinical trial with a Canadian hospital or health system partner.
  • Must be enrolled as an NRC IRAP firm. If you do not already have an NRC IRAP relationship, the HEALTHI team can help you connect with NRC IRAP to explore eligibility.
  • Must be a client of Innovation Factory. Firms can sign up free using Innovation Factory's client intake form.
  • Must provide a $2,500 cash matching contribution to unlock the $15,000.
  • Final program acceptance requires a positive recommendation from the program funder, NRC IRAP, obtained through an assigned NRC IRAP Industrial Technology Advisor (ITA).
  • Applications must declare any other sources of government funding received in the 12 months prior to applying.
  • Stacking federal government funding is not allowed; stacking provincial and municipal funding is subject to review and approval.
  • HEALTHI-CAN Health Network stream only: the technology must be at TRL-8 or above, and the firm must have a demonstrated interest and a recommendation from the CAN Health Network to explore a collaborative project. These two conditions apply to the CAN Health stream only, not to the standard HEALTHI stream.
  • HEALTHI-CAN Health Network stream only: the firm must first answer the CAN Health Network's Call for Innovation and be selected by a CAN Health Network health system partner.

How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

The application form is the easy part — the prerequisites are the real work. You need to be an NRC IRAP firm with an assigned ITA (their recommendation is what actually approves you) and a registered client of Innovation Factory, which is free and takes minutes. Do both before you apply. Also read the stacking rule carefully: stacking federal funding on the same work is not allowed and you must declare every government dollar received in the previous 12 months, so if you are already running a federally funded project, scope HEALTHI around different activities. Finally, the $15,000 never touches your bank account — Innovation Factory reimburses the hospital directly after the work is done and the final report and attestation are in.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are screened by the HEALTHI program team against the published minimum criteria — private Canadian incorporation, life science sector, TRL-6 or above, a clear clinical application, NRC IRAP enrolment and Innovation Factory client status — followed by an introductory meeting to explore project suitability and alignment. Final acceptance is not Innovation Factory's decision alone: the program team must secure a positive recommendation from the funder, NRC IRAP, through the firm's assigned Industrial Technology Advisor. The team then checks that a delivery partner has the capacity and matching capabilities to run the project before contracting.

Application Steps

1 Become an Innovation Factory client Participation requires being a client of Innovation Factory. Sign up free via the client intake form at innovationfactory.ca/client-intake-form/ — this unlocks advisory, mentorship and training services at no charge.
2 Confirm NRC IRAP enrolment You must be enrolled as an NRC IRAP firm. If you have no NRC IRAP relationship yet, the HEALTHI team can connect you with NRC IRAP to explore eligibility — do this before applying, as their recommendation decides the outcome.
3 Apply Complete the HEALTHI application form at cognitoforms.com/InnovationFactory2/InnovationFactoryHEALTHIApplicationForm, declaring any government funding received in the previous 12 months.
4 Screening meeting The HEALTHI program team reviews the application and schedules an introductory meeting to explore project suitability and alignment.
5 NRC IRAP recommendation The HEALTHI team contacts your NRC IRAP Industrial Technology Advisor to secure a recommendation to participate. Final program acceptance depends on this.
6 Match with a delivery partner The team works with Hamilton Health Sciences, The Research Institute of St. Joe's Hamilton, or a CAN Health Network health system partner to confirm capacity and capability alignment.
7 Contracting You and the delivery partner draft a contract defining scope, deliverables and milestones. The HEALTHI team reviews it and it is executed tri-laterally by you, the delivery partner and Innovation Factory.
8 Run the project and close out Perform the agreed activities with the delivery partner. The partner then submits an attestation of work completed and a final report signed by both parties, which triggers the $15,000 reimbursement to the partner.

Deadline Notes

HEALTHI runs a rolling application intake with no fixed windows. Innovation Factory states applications will be accepted until March 31, 2027, or until program funds have been fully committed — whichever comes first, so the practical constraint is fund availability rather than the date.

Clawback Risk

Low Risk

No clawback provisions are published. Payment flows to the delivery partner only after work is complete and the attestation and final report are accepted, so there is nothing to claw back from the firm — but the firm's $2,500 matching contribution is spent regardless of project outcome.

Do I have to be in Ontario to apply?
No. Innovation Factory's program guide opens HEALTHI to Canadian life science firms, and the CAN Health Network delivery stream reaches health system partners across 10 provinces and territories.
Do I need an NRC IRAP relationship first?
Yes — you must be enrolled as an NRC IRAP firm, and final acceptance requires a positive recommendation from your NRC IRAP advisor. If you have no relationship yet, the HEALTHI team will help you connect.
Does the $15,000 come to my company?
No. Innovation Factory reimburses the hospital delivery partner $15,000 once the work is done and the final report and attestation are accepted. You receive the services, not the cash.
