Program Description

MIST pays a Saskatchewan tech startup up to $30,000 of non-repayable funding to run a pilot of its technology with a Saskatchewan public sector body, Crown corporation, non-profit, community-based organization or municipality. The grant must be matched 1:1 by that project partner, so a $60,000 pilot splits into $30,000 from the partner and $30,000 from Innovation Saskatchewan. The $30,000 is a lifetime ceiling per company, and a company may draw it across several pilots. Applications are accepted year-round and startups are selected quarterly, with deadlines on April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31. Startups still looking for a partner can ask the MIST program manager for pathfinding support; more than one startup may jointly lead a single pilot.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Based in Saskatchewan: a Saskatchewan head office address, registered to carry business in the province, and at least 50% of employees residing in the province
  • Fewer than 50 employees, including full-time, part-time and contract workers
  • Reported annual recurring revenue of under $1M in the latest year-end financial statements
  • A novel technology that is ready to implement or close to commercialization, at least Technology Readiness Level 6
  • Reasonable capacity to work with an enterprise-level customer, for example government
  • The pilot has to run with an eligible project partner: the Government of Saskatchewan, its ministries, agencies and Crown corporations, Saskatchewan public sector organizations, Saskatchewan non-profit organizations, community-based organizations and municipalities
  • More than one eligible startup may jointly lead a single MIST pilot, and each one is held to every rule in the program guide including the $30,000 lifetime cap
  • A MIST grant may not be used to supplement project funding from another Innovation Saskatchewan grant program

Amount
Up to $30,000Up to $30,000 per startup, as a lifetime maximum across all MIST pilots, non-repayable. The MIST grant must be matched 1:1 by the eligible project partner, and there is no limit on the number of MIST grants a company can receive provided the lifetime total stays within $30,000. Innovation Saskatchewan's published examples: a $60,000 pilot with one partner contributing $30,000 cash and MIST providing $30,000; a $60,000 pilot across two partners contributing $15,000 cash each with MIST providing $30,000; and a $10,000 pilot with the partner contributing $5,000 cash and MIST providing $5,000. A partner's in-kind contribution (equipment, expertise, facilities or other resources) can be counted toward the match, but only where the partner has also committed a monetary contribution; Innovation Saskatchewan sets no minimum or maximum on that cash portion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about MIST

Free
How much can one startup get from MIST?
Up to $30,000, and that is a lifetime maximum for the company rather than a per-project amount. You can take it across several pilots, as long as the total stays within $30,000.
Do I need a public sector partner before I apply?
No, but you need one before any money is issued. The grant is only released once you have an executed contract or statement of work with an eligible partner. Innovation Saskatchewan offers pathfinding and introductions to startups that have not found a partner yet.
What does the 1:1 match mean in practice?
The eligible project partner has to put in the same amount MIST does. On a $60,000 pilot with one partner, the partner provides $30,000 in cash and MIST provides $30,000. The partner's in-kind contribution can count toward the match only if the partner has also committed money.
When is the next deadline?
October 31, 2026 for Intake Period 3. The committee meets on or before November 15 and Innovation Saskatchewan targets responses by November 30. After that the deadlines are January 31, April 30 and July 31.
Who qualifies as a startup for MIST?
A company with a Saskatchewan head office, registered to do business in the province, with at least half its employees living there, fewer than 50 people, under $1M in annual recurring revenue at its last year end, and a novel technology at Technology Readiness Level 6 or above.
Can I combine MIST with another Innovation Saskatchewan grant?
Not on the same project. MIST grants cannot supplement project funding from other Innovation Saskatchewan grant programs such as SAIF. Past recipients of other Innovation Saskatchewan programs can still apply for MIST, and MIST alumni who have used up the $30,000 cap can apply to the other programs.
