Program Description

New Brunswick's complementary farm lender. The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries provides repayable loans and loan guarantees to promote development of the agriculture sector, acting as a complementary lender: you have to seek financing from a private lender first, and the department may then fill the gap between what the project needs and what you were approved for privately. It funds buying an existing farm, starting a new farm, buying shares in a farming operation, buying or developing farmland, and working capital, but not refinancing or repaying debt. Applicants provide a business plan with three years of projections and three years of history, and acceptable security, plus at least 10% equity into the project. New entrants, defined as someone who has owned a farm for five years or less, may be eligible for lower interest rates and a 5% equity requirement. There is no application fee, interest rates are set case by case, and loan guarantees carry a fee of 1.5% of the amount guaranteed each year.

Eligibility Requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about New Brunswick Agriculture Loan and Loan Guarantees

Free
How much can a New Brunswick farm borrow under this programme?
The department does not publish a loan amount or ceiling. It lends as a complementary lender, so the size is the gap between what your project needs and what a private lender has already approved, within what the project can repay.
Do I have to go to my bank first?
Yes. The department states that clients interested in a DAAF loan or loan guarantee must first seek financing from a private lender, and that its programme may then be available to help fill the gap.
What can the loan be used for?
Purchasing an existing farm, starting a new farm, purchasing shares in a farming operation, purchasing land for farming, developing land for farming, and working capital. Refinancing or repaying debt is not eligible.
How much of my own money do I need in the project?
A minimum of 10% equity, or 5% if you are a new entrant, meaning someone who has owned a farm for five years or less. The department may require a higher equity level based on the risk of the project.
What does a loan guarantee cost?
A loan guarantee fee of 1.5% of the amount guaranteed, payable at the beginning of each year the guarantee is in place. There is no fee to apply for either a loan or a guarantee.
What interest rate and repayment terms apply?
Interest rates are determined on a case by case basis. Repayment terms are matched to the cash flow of the project as supported by your business plan, with interest-only payments or principal and interest payments as options.
