Program Description

Pilot program launched April 25, 2025 to help Nova Scotia food, beverage, seafood and farm businesses, commercial kitchens, co-packers and micro-businesses meet food safety requirements for retailers, food service companies, and institutional buyers. Reimburses eligible training at 100% of registration fees (to a maximum of $2,200 per applicant) and other eligible food safety costs at 70%, subject to per-activity caps, up to a maximum of $30,000 per applicant over the life of the program. A separate Micro-Business Stream covers up to 100% of eligible costs to a maximum of $2,400. Applications are accepted between May 1, 2025 and September 15, 2026. Administered by Perennia, the province's Crown food and agriculture corporation.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Nova Scotia-based food or beverage business, farm, seafood business, commercial kitchen, co-packer, or micro-business
  • Manufacturing or processing operations located in Nova Scotia
  • Applicant must be at least 19 years of age
  • Must be producing a retail-ready food product
  • Must be eligible for and enrolled in the Nova Scotia Loyal Program — enrolment is mandatory, not a preference
  • Must demonstrate they are meeting the food safety requirements of an existing retail or food service customer, and/or working to obtain a product listing with a new retail or food service contract
  • Food and beverage businesses must additionally be registered through the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks and be a licensed food processing business
  • Farm businesses must additionally be currently and properly registered in the correct income category under the Nova Scotia Farm Registration Act
  • Seafood businesses must additionally be currently and appropriately licensed and in good standing with the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture
  • Commercial kitchens must be approved/permitted to operate and subject to inspection by a Provincial Inspector
  • Micro-Business Stream: owner-operated business with 1–4 employees, funded at up to 100% of eligible costs to a maximum of $2,400

6 Receive Approval and Execute Project Once approved, execute training, audits, and facility upgrades per the approved scope. All activities must fall within the April 1, 2025 – January 15, 2027 activity period. Track all invoices and completion documentation.
7 Submit Reimbursement Claim Provide paid invoices, completion certificates, and audit reports by the January 15, 2027 final claim deadline. Perennia reimburses 100% of eligible training registration fees (to $2,200) and 70% of other eligible costs within their caps, typically within 4–6 weeks.
