How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

Contact your regional ITI office before completing your application — officers can confirm your project scope is eligible and help you maximize your funding request within the $10,000 cap. The 20% equity requirement can be met with cash or the value of your own labour on the project (confirm with your regional office). First-run production inventory is capped at 250 units per product — for makers and craftspeople planning larger initial runs, budget accordingly and consider splitting across fiscal years if needed. Apply at the start of the fiscal year (April) before the budget is exhausted.

Success Profile

An established NWT-based professional artist or artisan with 6+ months of NWT residency who is ready to formalize, scale, or market their arts practice as a business. Strong applicants have a clear project (e.g., purchase carving tools and produce a first inventory run of 200 pieces, or build a website and attend two craft markets) with realistic cost estimates from NWT suppliers.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are assessed for: professional arts practice (supported by artistic resume and work samples), NWT residency verification, clarity of the project budget and cost documentation, alignment with eligible expense categories, and feasibility of achieving the stated business outcome. First-come, first-served within budget; merit is assessed against program eligibility rather than competitive ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about NWT Arts Business Support Fund

Free
Can I apply as a sole proprietor without incorporating?
Yes — the program explicitly includes sole proprietors in the NWT arts sector. Incorporation is not required. You need 6 months of NWT residency and a professional arts practice.
Does the 20% equity have to be cash?
Cash is the clearest form of equity contribution. Your own unpaid labour on the project may count — confirm the valuation approach with your regional ITI office before including it in your budget.
Can I use the grant to buy raw materials for my crafts?
No — raw materials (clay, wood, fabric, pigments) are explicitly ineligible. The fund covers first-run production costs (labour and finishing for up to 250 finished units) and the tools and equipment to produce them.
What disciplines qualify as arts?
Dance, fashion, film and media arts, theatre, visual arts, traditional and fine crafts, digital art, literary arts, music and sound, and multidisciplinary art. If your discipline is unclear, contact your regional ITI office.
Can I apply again after completing a project?
Yes — you can reapply after completing and reporting on a funded project. The lifetime limit is not stated; the key rule is one active project at a time and a completed report before a new application.
