How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipContact your regional Tourism Development Officer first — this is mandatory and not optional. Officers help shape proposals before formal submission and can indicate whether your project fits current program priorities. A complete, detailed budget is the most common failure point; applications without it are returned without review. Projects that layer CTIC with NWT Tourism funding or federal Northern programs are viewed positively.
Rejection Pitfalls 6
- For-profit business applying — program is restricted to community and non-profit organizations
- Incomplete budget breakdown — applications without complete budgets are not reviewed
- No prior contact with regional Tourism Development Officer
Success Profile
A band council or NWT-registered non-profit with a well-defined community tourism capital project (visitor centre, boat launch, interpretive site, IT tourism platform), a matching funding source identified, and a Tourism Development Officer already engaged before the intake opens.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications are assessed on tourism infrastructure need, community benefit, project feasibility, budget completeness, and leverage of other funding sources. Projects must have a defined tourism purpose and demonstrate capacity to complete the project. Regional Tourism Development Officers play a key role in advising on fit before formal submission.
