Application Steps

1 Read the program information kit and check the eligibility gates "Before applying, we recommend you review the Challenge's information kit; it is available in both French and English." Then test yourself against five hard gates: TRL 6 or lower; pre-revenue, though pilot revenue is allowed; $250,000 in investment or less; if an existing company, in business five years or less with fewer than 10 full-time employees; and you must be the majority owner with rights to use the intellectual property. Applicants may be from anywhere in Canada or around the world, but winners must have an incorporated business in Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Ocean Startup Challenge 2026-2027

Free
Do I need to be incorporated in Canada to apply?
Not to apply — innovators and companies from across Canada and around the world may enter. But winners must have an incorporated business in Canada, registering an entity in a province or territory or federally before the award is paid.
Can my startup have revenue or investment already?
You must be pre-revenue, though pilot revenue is allowed, and have $250,000 in investment or less. Existing companies must also be five years or younger with fewer than 10 full-time employees, at TRL 6 or below.
How are applications scored?
By a published weighted rubric: team or founder 30%, problem understanding and market opportunity 20%, customer discovery and market interest 20%, proposed solution 15%, and use of funds and impact 15%. An evaluation committee of OSP staff and industry experts decides.
Does the Ocean Startup Project take my IP or equity?
No. Applicants retain ownership of any intellectual property associated with their application, all applications are treated confidentially, and only people directly involved in managing or judging the competition see your documents.
How long do winners have to use the money?
Until February 26, 2027 — successful applicants submit expenses related to achieving pre-determined milestones by that date, which is also when Challenge Programming ends. Winners also get an Executive-in-Residence and partner programming.
