Program Description

Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), delivered by the Ontario Centre of Innovation, accelerates commercialization and adoption of next-generation automotive and mobility technologies. Its R&D Partnership Fund supports the development, testing, validation and demonstration of technology in four focus areas: Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (C/AV), Smart Mobility and AI; Electric Vehicles (EV); Advanced Charging and Vehicle to Grid (A/C & V2G); and Semiconductor and Hardware (S&H). Stream 1 provides up to $100,000 over a maximum of 12 months and Stream 2 up to $1,000,000 over a maximum of 24 months, and all OVIN funds must be matched by a minimum 2:1 contribution from the applicant and/or private sector partners.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a company incorporated and operating in Ontario, with the project carried out in Ontario
  • Must be a small or medium enterprise with fewer than 500 global full-time employees
  • Project must develop, test, validate or demonstrate automotive or mobility technology in one of OVIN's four focus areas: Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (C/AV), Smart Mobility and AI; Electric Vehicles (EV); Advanced Charging and Vehicle to Grid (A/C & V2G); Semiconductor and Hardware (S&H)
  • Project must include demonstration of an actual product that can be showcased in Ontario — at events, on the road, to OCI and its partners, and/or at customer sites
  • Technology must be at Technology Readiness Level 3-9 and advancing toward commercialization — the fund does not support proving feasibility or conducting basic technology research
  • All OVIN funds must be matched by a minimum 2:1 contribution from applicants and/or private sector partners, in both streams — at least $200,000 from your side for a $100,000 Stream 1 award, and at least $2,000,000 for a $1,000,000 Stream 2 award

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about OVIN

Free
Can sole proprietors apply for OVIN?
No — must be incorporated and operating in Ontario. Sole proprietors must incorporate first to qualify. OVIN requires a legal entity structure.
What's the realistic award for first-time applicants?
Stream 1: $50,000-$100,000 OVIN contribution (requires $100,000-$200,000 partner co-investment). Total project budget: $150,000-$300,000.
Do I need an industry partner before applying?
Not strictly. OVIN's 2:1 match may come from the applicant and/or private-sector partners, so an applicant can fund the match alone. But partnership quality is weighted heavily in evaluation, and an OEM, Tier 1, transit authority or major fleet operator materially strengthens an application.
How long does the application take?
Two stages, and the second is where the work is. First a short OCI client intake form; then, if invited, a full proposal carrying a partnership strategy with letters of support, TRL documentation, a work plan with milestones, a commercialization plan, and financials showing you can fund the 2:1 co-investment match. Contact Dan Ruby ([email protected]) for pre-submission guidance.
Why do most applications fail?
Common reasons: TRL below 3 (basic research), no industry partner, or unable to fund 2:1 co-investment match. OVIN rejects projects focused on manufacturing, not technology development.
