How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipSecuring a strong industry partner before applying is the single most important factor. OVIN evaluates partnership quality heavily — an OEM, Tier 1 supplier, transit authority, or major fleet operator as a partner dramatically strengthens the application. Reach out to OCI's Business Development team (oc-innovation.ca) before submitting your EOI — they actively help shape viable applications and can advise on which stream fits your project. TRL staging is critical: projects must be past basic research (TRL 3+) but OVIN funds development and demonstration, not manufacturing scale-up.
Rejection Pitfalls 10
- Technology below TRL 3 (basic research only — OVIN funds development, not fundamental science)
- No eligible industry or academic partner (all streams require minimum one partner)
- Project focused on automotive manufacturing processes rather than EV/connected/autonomous/smart mobility technologies
Success Profile
Ontario-incorporated SME with fewer than 500 global FTEs. Company has at least TRL 3 technology in EV, connected/autonomous vehicle, or smart mobility. Has secured or can secure an industry partner (OEM, Tier 1 supplier, transit authority, fleet operator, or municipality). Clear commercialization plan with demonstrated market demand. Technical team with R&D and product development experience. Companies with existing IP and patent activity are viewed favourably. Geographic requirement: Ontario operations, project conducted in Ontario.
Evaluation Criteria
Commercial pull and market demand (is an industry partner actively pulling toward deployment?), partnership quality (OEM/Tier 1 carries more weight than startup partners), competitive advantage of technology, alignment with OVIN's four focus areas (EV/charging, C/AV/smart mobility, semiconductors, AI-in-automotive), and scalability of outcomes. No creative or academic merit evaluation.
