Program Description

Saskatoon's Environmental Cash Grant gives registered nonprofits, co-operatives and charities matching funding of up to $10,000, covering no more than half of a project budget, for work that makes the city more environmentally sustainable. Eligible projects sit in one of the city's named categories: protecting and enhancing Saskatoon's green network and natural resources, safeguarding water, improving energy and water efficiency in buildings and operations, cutting waste going to landfill, encouraging active transportation, and environmental communications, research and education. The city's own examples run from pollinator and edible garden projects and neighbourhood clean-ups to rain gardens, rain barrels, lighting and appliance upgrades, repair hubs and swap shops, bike racks and repair workshops, summer camps and newcomer education. Schools take part by applying through an organization that meets the eligibility rules. The 2026 round is closed; the next intake opens in November 2026 and closes in February 2027, with awards in mid-April. It runs under City of Saskatoon Council Policy C03-018.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Your organization must be registered under one of the following and comply with its provisions: the Non-profit Corporations Act of the Province of Saskatchewan, the Co-operative Act of the Province of Saskatchewan, or the charitable status regulations of the Canada Revenue Agency
  • Schools are also eligible when applying through an organization that meets the eligibility criteria
  • The organization must serve the needs of Saskatoon residents and preferably have membership that resides within the geographical boundaries of the city
  • A national or provincial parent body of a local branch may qualify provided the application relates to a program that specifically targets Saskatoon
  • A Saskatoon chapter that is not incorporated in its own right may apply if it provides the parent organization's contact information and incorporation number, so the grant payment can be made out to the incorporated organization
  • The organization must have an independent governing body composed of volunteers, which is held responsible for the effectiveness of services provided and for financial accountability
  • Applicants must have a minimum of $2,000,000 liability and participant insurance
  • The project must relate to one or more of the city's environmental categories and meet a demonstrated community need that is supported by the City
  • The grant funds no more than 50% of the project budget and requests should not exceed $10,000
  • An organization receives only one grant per year under this program, though several project requests may be consolidated into one application

Funding Details

Amount
Up to $10,000Matching funding of up to $10,000. The city funds no more than 50% of any project budget, and the application has to show clearly how the remaining half will be covered. The city lists 16 awards for 2026, ranging from $250 to the full $10,000; they add up to $69,000 by our count. The page also lists an envelope per project category for the coming round, with the note that the amount per category is to be confirmed after budget: $10,000 for the green network and natural resources, $15,000 for safeguarding water, $15,000 for reducing landfill waste, $10,000 for active transportation, and for promoting environmental awareness $13,000 for general education plus $6,000 for festivals and events. Those are pots the city expects to spread across applicants, not the size of a grant. No figure is shown for the energy and water efficiency category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about City of Saskatoon Environmental Grant

Free
How much can we get?
Up to $10,000, and no more than 50% of the project budget. Your application has to show clearly how the other half is covered. The city lists 16 awards for 2026, from $250 up to the full $10,000, adding up to $69,000 by our count.
Can a business apply?
No. The applicant has to be registered under the Non-profit Corporations Act of Saskatchewan, the Co-operative Act of Saskatchewan, or CRA charitable status regulations. Schools can take part by applying through an organization that meets the criteria.
When is the next deadline?
The 2026 round is closed. The city's schedule says applications open in November 2026 and close in February 2027, without naming the day. The 2026 deadline was February 6, so expect early February, but check the page before you plan around it.
What do those category amounts on the page mean?
They are the money the city expects to have available in each category, such as $15,000 for safeguarding water, and the page notes the amount per category is to be confirmed after budget. They are not the size of a grant; the per-grant ceiling is $10,000.
What kinds of projects get funded?
Work in one of six areas: the green network and natural resources, safeguarding water, energy and water efficiency, reducing landfill waste, active transportation, and environmental awareness. The city's 2026 awards covered bike repair and bike valets, rainwater capture, lighting and solar upgrades, community cooking classes, a refillable water station and garden rebuilds.
Is there anything the grant cannot pay for?
Buying or constructing a new facility, money passed to third parties, and anything already funded by this program or another City of Saskatoon source. It also will not cover accumulated deficits or program shortfalls. Renovating an existing building to use less energy or water is eligible.
Can we apply twice in a year?
No, one grant per organization per year, but you can roll several project requests into a single application. Preference also goes to organizations that did not receive funding the previous year, and an outstanding report from an earlier grant will stop a new application being considered.
