How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

Contact SODEC's admissibilite@sodec. gouv.qc.ca at least one month before your target submission deadline to confirm your eligibility — this is mandatory for first-time applicants and for experienced producers applying in a new format (e.g., transitioning from shorts to features). All applications must be submitted in French. English-language productions compete for a smaller allocation (≤20% of total funds), so realistic budget planning is essential. The Development program is a lower-risk entry point for new applicants — up to $250,000 at 50% coverage for project development before committing to a full production application.

Premium See what trips up most applicants for this program — and how to avoid it.

Success Profile

An established Quebec production company with at least one professionally produced and distributed audiovisual work in the past 8 years, applying to produce a Quebec-owned French-language fiction film, documentary, or short film. The ideal applicant has a completed script with demonstrated rights ownership, confirmed co-financing (broadcaster pre-buy, Telefilm, CMF letters of interest), and producers with strong industry relationships and SODEC submission history.

Premium See what successful applicants for this program actually look like.

Evaluation Criteria

SODEC evaluates projects on artistic merit and cultural significance, the producer's professional track record and past project outcomes, the quality and stage of script development, the strength of the financing plan (confirmed co-financing is a major factor), the project's contribution to Quebec's audiovisual sector, and priority for French-language original works. External readers or committees assess feature film applications. Short film applications for Volet 2 are assessed primarily on creative quality and eligibility.

Clawback Risk

Medium Risk

Medium risk — if the production is abandoned, not completed, or significantly deviates from the funded project, SODEC may require repayment of disbursed funds. The clawback mechanism is standard in all SODEC funding agreements. Productions that are completed but fail to meet delivery requirements may have final payment withheld rather than face clawback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about SODEC — Film and TV Production Support (Qu...

Free
Can a first-time production company apply to SODEC?
Yes, but producers must demonstrate at least one professionally produced and distributed audiovisual work in Quebec within the past 8 years. Truly first-time producers without this track record are unlikely to be eligible. First-time applicants to SODEC must also contact [email protected] at least one month before the deadline.
Must the application be submitted in French?
Yes — all SODEC applications must be submitted in French regardless of the production's language. English-language productions can apply but compete for a smaller allocation (SODEC dedicates at least 80% of funds to French-language originals).
What is the difference between the Production Aid and Development programs?
The Development program covers the project development phase (script, rights, financing) at up to 50% of costs (max $250,000). The Production Aid covers actual production at up to 65% (max $4M for features). Development funding is typically obtained first, before production funding is applied for.
Can I combine SODEC production funding with Telefilm Canada or CMF?
Yes — stacking SODEC, Telefilm, and CMF funding is the standard financing structure for Quebec films. Each funder reviews the complete financing plan, and each government assistance amount reduces the eligible cost base for the others.
How long does it take to receive a decision?
Typically 4-6 months from the submission deadline to the funding decision, depending on the volet and intake cycle. Feature film applications (Volet 1) may take up to 5-6 months due to external review committee assessment.
