Program Description
A Nova Scotia startup competition offering up to $50,000 in non-dilutive, non-repayable funding per company, with a focus on rural entrepreneurship. The 2026 intake has closed and the next round has not yet been announced.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be an early-stage, knowledge-based startup whose head office is physically located in one of the three Spark regions — Spark Southwest (Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis, Kings and West Hants counties), Spark North (Guysborough, Antigonish, Pictou, Cumberland, Colchester, East Hants and rural Halifax County, excluding Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford), or Spark Cape Breton (all of Cape Breton Island).
- Have a genuine physical presence at that address, such as a home and/or office — judges may require proof via utility bills or similar correspondence.
- Apply in the region where the business is physically located; each region runs independently with its own applicant pool and local judges.
- Qualify as a start-up by revenue rather than by age: zero or minimal revenue obtained before the company commercially scaled up.
- Offer a unique technology or innovative product or service that cannot be easily duplicated, and use technology as a core aspect of the business such that the business is not possible without it.
- Not be a consulting business — consulting businesses are not eligible.
- Not have previously won the Spark Nova Scotia Competition, including through the Spark Innovation Challenge; previous non-winning applicants are welcome to apply again.
- Enter only one idea per individual entrant. Entries may be submitted by individuals, partnerships or corporations, and there is no entry fee.
- Disclose any funding already received at the time of registration, including any source of funding that has an equity ownership component.
- Entrants must ultimately incorporate their startup company in order to be eligible for funding — incorporation is not required to enter, but proof of business registration in the region is required before a winner can receive the award.
- Apply through the Nova Scotia Association of Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs), which administers Spark.

Do I need to be incorporated to enter?
Not to enter — entries may be submitted by individuals, partnerships or corporations. But "Entrants must ultimately incorporate their startup company in order to be eligible for funding", and proof of registration in your region is required before a winner receives the award.
Which parts of Nova Scotia actually qualify?
Only the three Spark regions: Southwest (Lunenburg through Kings and West Hants), North (Guysborough through Colchester, East Hants and rural Halifax County), and all of Cape Breton Island. Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford are excluded.
What counts as a start-up here?
Revenue, not years. Spark states "Start-up refers only to sales revenue and not to the number of years in business" — you may have minimal sales from customer validation, but not have commercially scaled up.
Can I apply again if I entered before?
Yes. Spark says previous applicants are "very welcome and encouraged to apply again". Only previous Spark winners — including winners through the Spark Innovation Challenge — cannot re-apply.
Does every winner receive the full $50,000?
No. The judging panel determines award amounts by dividing the award pool at its discretion based on the competitive merit of each investment proposal, and Spark "does not guarantee any amount of funding". $50,000 is the per-company maximum.
