Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Telefilm Canada — Talent to Watch Program

Free
Can I apply if I've directed a short film?
Yes, but you must not have directed a theatrical feature film. The program is strictly for first-time feature directors, regardless of short film experience. Rejection reason: 'Applicant has already directed a feature film.'
What's the realistic project budget range?
Projects typically require $150,000–$250,000 total funding. The grant covers up to 100% of financing, but most projects need additional funding to reach full budget. Acceptance rate: ~11%.
Do I need to be incorporated?
Yes, you must be part of an incorporated Canadian production company. Rejection reason: 'Applicant is not an incorporated Canadian production company.'
Can I stack this with other funding?
Yes — Ontario-based productions stack with Ontario Creates, BC with Creative BC + 33-35% tax credit, Quebec with SODEC + 36-40% tax credit. CPTC (25% federal tax credit) is also compatible.
What's the biggest rejection reason?
Most rejections are for 'Applicant has already directed a feature film' or 'Project already in production.' Screenplay must be production-ready — not just a draft.
