Program Description
Alberta cost-share program helping primary producers buy or upgrade on-farm irrigation systems and develop on-farm water supply projects.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a primary producer operating in Alberta
- Must be responsible for input costs for agricultural crops or livestock producing at least $25,000 worth of farm commodities annually
- Must not be a landlord whose only interest in the crop or livestock is land ownership
- On-Farm Irrigation Stream: must own an irrigated agricultural operation in Alberta and not have been previously approved for the same project type for the parcel described
- On-Farm Water Supply Stream: must be liable to pay Alberta income tax or corporate tax (or claim losses) on income from production of farm commodities

How much can I get?
Under the On-Farm Irrigation Stream, a maximum of $35,000 per fiscal year per applicant: 50% of eligible expenses up to $17,500 per parcel for system purchases and up to $6,000 per parcel for upgrades. Under the On-Farm Water Supply Stream, project-specific maximums with an overall maximum of $40,000 per applicant for the period April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2028.
Can I apply to both streams?
Yes. An applicant may apply to one or both of the program streams.
How long does approval take?
Alberta does not say. The page states that application processing is underway but an estimated timeline for approval is not currently available.
Do I need approval before I build a dugout or dam?
Yes. For dugouts, dams and spring developments under the On-Farm Water Supply Stream, you must speak to an Agriculture and Irrigation Water Specialist and receive an approved Construction Sheet prior to planning and construction. Call 310-FARM.
What proof of payment is needed?
Invoices must be under the legal name stated on your application and dated after April 1, 2023. The irrigation stream requires proof of a 10% down payment for all eligible expenses; the water supply stream requires proof of payment in full for all invoices.
Is funding guaranteed if I qualify?
No. There is limited funding under this program each fiscal year, applications are considered case by case, and submitting a completed application does not guarantee payment. If your application is not approved you will not be reimbursed for any expenses associated with your project.
