Program Description
Business loans for rural Alberta small businesses and entrepreneurs delivered through 27 Community Futures offices, each of which sets its own lending ceiling across the province, funded by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan). A developmental lender for rural businesses unable to access conventional bank financing, with free business advisory services included.
Eligibility Requirements
- Small or medium-sized business located in rural Alberta (within a CF office service area — 27 offices province-wide)
- Sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations. One office's own loan application also lists Non-Profit and Co-op among the business types you can check, so a non-profit or co-op is not automatically out
- Startups, business acquisitions, and expansions
- Businesses unable to obtain conventional bank financing (CF fills the financing gap)
- A personal investment is required. The office asks you to provide cash plus security such as vehicles, equipment, land or buildings to back the loan. No minimum percentage is published
- Viable business plan demonstrating economic viability and potential for job creation or maintenance
- Decisions made locally by volunteer boards — criteria vary by office
- You must be involved in the day-to-day operations of the business
- You must be of legal age and a resident of Canada
- You must contact a bank first. If you are unable to secure appropriate financing under reasonable terms elsewhere, contact Community Futures
