Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Storefront Refresh Grant

Free
Can sole proprietors apply?
Yes, sole proprietors are eligible as long as they own or rent a commercial property in an Edmonton BIA with a street-facing storefront. Must be operating as a business, not residential.
What's the typical award amount?
Most applicants receive $800, not the $1,000 max. The City typically pays 80% of eligible costs up to $1,000 total. Projects over $1,000 are ineligible.
When should I apply to avoid missing out?
Apply January-February each year. Annual funding often runs out by May, so early applications have higher success rates. No fixed deadlines but early is critical.
Why do most applications get rejected?
Most rejections are due to annual funding exhaustion (common by May), or applying for projects larger than $2,000 (should use Storefront Improvement Grant instead).
Do I need to pay upfront?
Yes, you pay for the work first and submit receipts for reimbursement. Matching funds required: you must cover at least 20% of the total project cost.
