How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipApply as early in January or February as possible — the annual allocation is small and can be exhausted by mid-year. This grant is ideal for minor cosmetic work (touch-up painting, small signage refreshes, minor fixtures) that does not justify the design-heavy application required for the Storefront Improvement Grant. If your project will cost more than $2,000 (meaning you would hit the $1,000 cap), also evaluate whether the Storefront Improvement Grant (ID 23) is more appropriate for larger scope work.
Rejection Pitfalls 5
- Annual funding allocation already exhausted
- Business or property not located in a designated Edmonton BIA
- Project scope is too large (should apply to Storefront Improvement Grant instead)
Success Profile
Small retail or commercial tenants/owners in Edmonton BIAs undertaking minor cosmetic exterior improvements — signage updates, minor paint, small fixture replacements — with total project cost under $2,000.
Evaluation Criteria
First-come, first-served allocation until annual budget exhausted. No scored evaluation — eligibility is the only criterion. Applicant must be in a designated Edmonton BIA and project must constitute a genuine exterior improvement (not routine maintenance).
