How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

Include professional architectural renderings even if not strictly required — the Project Review Committee heavily weights design quality. Projects that clearly articulate streetscape improvement and meet the transparent-window requirement score highest. Corner buildings with two active commercial facades qualify for double the funding ($50K vs $25K), so confirm your building configuration before applying. Do not start any construction before receiving written approval — this disqualifies the entire application.

Success Profile

Commercial property owners (not tenants) in high-traffic BIA corridors with older building stock (20+ years), clear streetscape improvement vision, professional design drawings, and projects that prioritize transparent glazing and accessibility upgrades.

Evaluation Criteria

Project Review Committee evaluates applications on: design quality (professionally rendered elevations strongly favoured), alignment with 2026 design principles (energy efficiency, climate resiliency, transparent glazing), number and significance of improvements, and BIA location eligibility. Not first-come, first-served — design quality is the primary differentiator.

2 Engage a design professional Hire an architect or designer to produce architectural elevations and renderings. Design fees are 50% reimbursable up to $5,000. Renderings are the most important factor in committee approval.
3 Prepare application package Compile: completed Storefront Improvement Application Form, architectural elevations and renderings, building/development permit documentation, proof of ownership or owner authorization, contractor quotes, and current photographs of existing storefront.
4 Submit during intake window Submit during one of the three 2026 intake windows: February 1–28, April 1–30, or November 1–30. Applications outside these windows are not accepted.
5 Project Review Committee evaluation Committee evaluates design quality and eligibility. Decisions issued 3–4 weeks after intake closes. Committee may recommend design modifications before final approval.
6 Receive approval and obtain permits After written approval, obtain all required building permits. Do not begin construction before receiving approval.

8 Submit completion documentation Submit compliance documentation: final invoices, photos of completed work, proof of permit sign-off.
9 Receive reimbursement Grant issued after project completion verification. Allow 3–6 weeks post-completion for payment processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Storefront Improvement Grant

Free
Can sole proprietors apply as property owners?
Yes, if you own the commercial property personally (not as a business entity). Must be the legal owner listed on property tax records. Tenants cannot apply.
What's the typical award amount?
Most approved projects receive $15,000 (not the max $55k). Projects under $30k rarely qualify for full reimbursement. Check current guidelines for minimum project size.
When do decisions come out after applying?
After each intake window closes (Feb 28, Apr 30, Nov 30), decisions take 3-4 weeks. Submit in February for earliest approval to avoid construction delays.
Do I need professional drawings?
Yes — include architectural renderings even if not required. Projects without them are rejected. Corner buildings with two facades qualify for double funding ($50k vs $25k).
Can I combine this with other grants?
Yes, stackable with Alberta Main Street Program (where BIAs overlap) and Community Mural Grant. Confirm eligibility with City staff before applying.
