How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipElevateIP is not a cash grant — it's subsidized access to IP lawyers and patent agents through your regional BAI (e. g., Communitech, Invest Ottawa, North Forge). The single best move is to build a relationship with your regional BAI/incubator BEFORE ElevateIP 2.0 opens, because access is gated through them. Startups without an existing accelerator relationship will struggle with intake. Women-owned and Indigenous-owned companies should highlight their ownership structure from the start — the 90% subsidy rate (vs. 70–80% standard) makes this the most cost-effective IP funding available in Canada.
Rejection Pitfalls 8
- Not a CCPC (foreign-controlled, sole proprietorship, or non-profit)
- IP owned by individual founders, not the company entity
- Industry without protectable IP (retail, food service, trades, consulting without proprietary tech)
Success Profile
Early-stage tech startups (seed to Series A) with a novel innovation they haven't yet formally protected. Ideal companies are SaaS, deep tech, biotech, or cleantech. Best fit: founders who have a working product, are approaching investors or international customers, and realize they need IP diligence done urgently. Companies already connected to a BAI or accelerator. Women-majority and Indigenous-majority founded companies get the best value (90% subsidy).

Deadline Notes
ElevateIP 1.0 program activities must wrap by March 31, 2026. The Government of Canada announced $84.4M renewal in Nov 2025 for 2026-27 onward. No intake open date confirmed. Database entry 'New intake expected 2026' is directionally accurate but speculative. Monitor regional BAI partner sites (Communitech, Invest Ottawa, North Forge, New Ventures BC, Springboard Atlantic) for 2.0 announcement.
