Program Description

Halifax Regional Municipality's African Nova Scotian Affairs Integration Office gives one-time grants of $500 to $10,000 to registered non-profits and charities for community-led projects that address anti-Black racism in Halifax. Projects should tackle at least one form of anti-Black racism named in the municipality's action plan: racial segregation, historic omission, lack of recognition, systemic expropriation, or negative portrayal in media and literature. Priority goes to applicants from African Nova Scotian and African descent communities, especially grassroots, volunteer-led groups. Eligible costs include professional and facilitator fees, studies and plans, accessibility aids, rentals, one-time marketing, commissioned works, community research, non-commercial publishing, one-time events and construction. The 2026 intake runs October 1 to November 14, 2026.

Eligibility Requirements

  • A registered non-profit or charity: a Nova Scotia society, a non-profit association or non-profit housing co-operative registered with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies, a federally incorporated non-profit, a non-profit incorporated under another Nova Scotia or federal act, or a CRA-registered charity (the application asks for the registration number)
  • The project is community-based and community-led and works against anti-Black racism in Halifax
  • The project should address at least one form of anti-Black racism from the municipality's 2020 action plan update: racial segregation, historic omission, lack of recognition, systemic expropriation, or negative portrayal in media and literature
  • Priority goes to applicants from African Nova Scotian and African descent communities, with an emphasis on grassroots, volunteer-led groups serving local residents; this is a priority, not a requirement
  • Two authorized representatives sign the application, one of them a board member, and last year's financial statements are attached
  • Earlier recipients must have filed the final report on their previous grant
