How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

This grant is one of the more accessible Hamilton programs — it targets new tenants specifically and does not require matching funds. If you are opening your first retail or service location in Hamilton, this is a natural early application. Confirm with City Economic Development that the specific storefront was classified as vacant (not merely temporarily unoccupied) to avoid eligibility issues. Apply before signing the lease if possible so the grant can be counted as part of your startup budget.

Premium See what trips up most applicants for this program — and how to avoid it.

Rejection Pitfalls 5

  • Space was not previously vacant (existing tenant vacating for a new tenant does not qualify)
  • Property outside eligible Hamilton commercial districts or BIAs
  • Work already completed before grant approval

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Hamilton Commercial Vacancy Assistance Pro...

Free
Can pop-up businesses apply, or is this for permanent tenants only?
Both permanent and pop-up commercial tenants are eligible. Pop-ups bringing activity to vacant storefronts are explicitly one of the program's target beneficiaries.
What counts as 'previously vacant'?
The space must have been unoccupied by a commercial tenant — not just transitioning from one tenant to another. Confirm the vacancy classification with City Economic Development before applying.
Is matching funding required?
No — unlike the Façade Revitalization Grant, this program does not require matching funds from the applicant. You can claim up to $10,000 in eligible interior improvements.
Can I also apply for the Commercial District Revitalization Grant for exterior work?
Once you are an established tenant, you could potentially apply to the exterior/façade program for future exterior improvements. The two programs target different scopes — interior fit-out (this program) vs exterior improvements (the Revitalization Grant).
What if the CIP is under review — should I still apply?
Programs remain active during the review. Contact Hamilton Economic Development first to confirm current budget availability — if funds remain, qualified applications can still be approved.
