Program Description

Grant of up to $10,000 for interior improvements made by new commercial tenants taking over previously vacant ground-floor commercial space in eligible Hamilton commercial districts and BIAs. Targets pop-up businesses as well as permanent tenants, with the goal of reducing commercial vacancy on Hamilton's main streets and bringing new business activity to empty storefronts.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant is a new permanent or pop-up commercial tenant moving into a previously vacant commercial space at, or below, grade
  • Property is located within eligible Hamilton commercial districts, BIAs, or designated commercial corridors
  • Space was previously vacant (not currently occupied by another commercial tenant)
  • Improvements are to the interior of the commercial space to make it fit for the new tenant's use
  • Apply before commencing interior improvements

What counts as 'previously vacant'?
The space must have been unoccupied by a commercial tenant — not just transitioning from one tenant to another. Confirm the vacancy classification with City Economic Development before applying.
Is matching funding required?
No — unlike the Façade Revitalization Grant, this program does not require matching funds from the applicant. You can claim up to $10,000 in eligible interior improvements.
Can I also apply for the Commercial District Revitalization Grant for exterior work?
Once you are an established tenant, you could potentially apply to the exterior/façade program for future exterior improvements. The two programs target different scopes — interior fit-out (this program) vs exterior improvements (the Revitalization Grant).
