How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

HARVEST is the most accessible Genome Canada-affiliated funding pathway for commercial companies. Unlike GAPP or LSARP (which require academic principal investigators), HARVEST is designed specifically for for-profit enterprises. Choose your stream carefully: wasteCANcreate focuses on waste valorization, while PACT targets on-farm production improvements. Contact the stream lead organization directly — they want strong applicants for their inaugural cohort. The life cycle assessment requirement is non-negotiable; budget for an LCA consultant if you lack in-house expertise.

Rejection Pitfalls 8

  • Not a Canadian-based for-profit enterprise
  • Technology does not involve genomics, biotechnology, metabolomics, or engineering biology
  • No clear GHG emission reduction potential or inability to demonstrate through LCA

Success Profile

Canadian-incorporated for-profit company with a commercially viable genomics or biotechnology innovation targeting agriculture or food systems. Has credible co-funding to match HARVEST funds 1:1. Can demonstrate measurable GHG emission reduction through a life cycle assessment. Clear path to market within the 2-year project window. For wasteCANcreate: converting agricultural waste into bio-based products. For PACT: improving crop production or on-farm efficiency through biological tools.

Premium See what successful applicants for this program actually look like.

Evaluation Criteria

Projects evaluated by an external assessment committee on: (1) Market opportunity and competitive positioning — commercial viability and demand for the innovation, (2) Environmental impact potential — measurable GHG emission reduction through life cycle assessment, (3) Organizational capacity — team expertise and ability to complete milestones within 24 months, (4) Co-funding commitment level — applicants providing near or up to 50% match viewed more favourably than those at the one-third minimum. Stream alignment (wasteCANcreate for waste valorization or PACT for on-farm production) is critical — misalignment is a disqualifier.

Application Steps

1 Determine Stream Alignment Identify whether your innovation fits wasteCANcreate (upcycling agricultural/food waste into bio-based products) or PACT (crop improvement, pest resistance, on-farm efficiency). Misalignment is a disqualifier.
2 Attend Information Session Register at harvestaccelerator.ca for the Zoom information session (held March 2, 2026 for inaugural cohort). Contact the relevant regional genome centre for stream-specific guidance.
3 Submit Preliminary Intake Form Complete and submit the HARVEST preliminary intake form by the deadline (March 18, 2026 for inaugural cohort). This is a brief screening application.
4 Full Application (If Invited) Selected preliminary applicants are invited to submit a full application including detailed project plan, budget, co-funding evidence, team bios, and LCA plan. Due April 13, 2026 for inaugural cohort.
5 External Assessment Committee Review Full applications are reviewed by an external assessment committee evaluating market opportunity, environmental impact, organizational capacity, and co-funding strength.
6 Funding Notification and Agreement Successful applicants notified by May 11, 2026. Contribution agreement negotiated and signed. Co-funding must be confirmed before HARVEST funds are released.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about HARVEST Accelerator (Genome Canada — Agric...

Free
Can I apply if I'm a sole proprietor?
No. Only Canadian-incorporated for-profits qualify. Sole proprietors must incorporate before applying. HARVEST requires a legal entity for grant administration.
What's the realistic grant amount for a startup?
Typical award: $400K-$500K from HARVEST. Requires 1:1 matching, so total project value $800K-$1M. Realistic for a startup with $400K co-funding.
When are decisions made?
Preliminary applications due March 18, 2026; full applications due April 13, 2026. Decisions announced May 2026. Project work must end by March 31, 2028.
Why do applications get rejected?
Common rejections: no genomics/biotech tech, no GHG reduction proof via LCA, insufficient matching funds, or not fitting wasteCANcreate/PACT streams.
Can I stack with SR&ED?
Yes. HARVEST-funded R&D can claim SR&ED tax credits. SR&ED doesn't count toward matching co-funding but reduces net project cost.
