Program Description

CAMEDA gives Ontario-based medical device firms up to $100,000 in non-dilutive FedDev Ontario funding to run a manufacturing project with one of the program's contract development and manufacturing partners — Cortex Design, Engineering CPR, Inertia Product Development, Linamar, McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute, Megalab or Microart. The device must be at TRL-7 or above and the firm must provide a 1.6x cash match, so a maximum award supports roughly a $270,000 project.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian incorporated company with operations primarily based in Ontario.
  • Must be a medical device firm — the program's eligibility is written for medical device firms specifically, not life science firms generally.
  • Must be developing a medical device at the TRL-7 level or above.
  • Must provide a 1.6x cash matching contribution against the FedDev Ontario amount.
  • Must identify a scope of work with a CAMEDA partner where the proposed project will take place. Listed partners are Avania CRO, Cortex Design, Engineering CPR, Inertia Product Development, Linamar, McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute, MegaLab Group and Microart Services.
  • Applications are accepted and reviewed on a continuous, rolling basis; there is no cost to apply.
  • Funding is released in tranches on a reimbursement basis, so the firm must be able to carry project costs before being repaid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about CAMEDA

Free
Do I have to put up matching funds?
Yes, and it must be cash. CAMEDA requires a 1.6x cash match against the FedDev Ontario amount, so a full $100,000 award means finding $160,000 in cash.
Does this cover any life science company?
No. CAMEDA's eligibility is written for medical device firms, and the device must be at TRL-7 or above. Innovation Factory's SOPHIE program is the broader life-sciences equivalent.
Can I use my own manufacturing partner?
No. You must identify a scope of work with one of the listed CAMEDA partners — Avania CRO, Cortex Design, Engineering CPR, Inertia Product Development, Linamar, McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute, MegaLab Group or Microart Services.
How big a project can $100,000 actually support?
Roughly $270,000. That combines the maximum $100,000 FedDev contribution, your 1.6x cash match, and the CAMEDA partner's 4% in-kind contribution (minimum $2,500).
When does the money arrive?
In tranches, on a reimbursement basis, against milestones set out in the CAMEDA Project contract. You incur eligible costs first and are repaid after.
