Program Description
SOPHIE gives Ontario-based life science firms up to $100,000 in non-dilutive FedDev Ontario funding for a commercialization project run with a Hamilton-area academic or clinical partner — McMaster University, Mohawk College, Hamilton Health Sciences or St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. The firm must match 1.25x the FedDev contribution in cash and in-kind, and identify a principal investigator or clinical champion at the partner institution. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a Canadian incorporated company with operations primarily based in Ontario.
- Must be a life science firm.
- Must be developing an innovative technology at the TRL-6 level or above.
- Must provide a 1.25x match as cash and in-kind contributions against the FedDev Ontario amount.
- Must identify a principal investigator or clinical champion at the academic or clinical partner institution where the proposed project will take place.
- The project must be a collaborative commercialization project with a Hamilton-area academic or clinical institution such as McMaster University, Mohawk College, Hamilton Health Sciences or St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.
- Applications are accepted and reviewed on a continuous, rolling basis; there is no cost to apply.
- Funding is disbursed in stages on a reimbursement basis, so the firm must be able to carry project costs before being repaid.

First, this is not a pure grant: you must put up 1.25x the FedDev amount in cash and in-kind, so a full $100,000 award means finding roughly $125,000 of your own contribution — and the money comes back in stages on a reimbursement basis, so you carry the cost first. Second, you need a named principal investigator or clinical champion at a Hamilton institution before the project can be scoped. You do not have to arrive with one: apply anyway, because Innovation Factory reviews within 1-2 weeks and then runs an introductory meeting specifically to match you with a suitable champion. Applying is free.
Evaluation Criteria
Innovation Factory reviews the application within 1-2 weeks against three program outcomes: the project must demonstrate strong commercialization potential and generate new intellectual property; show how it will lead to job creation or retention; and articulate a compelling product value proposition that attracts new investment, generates revenue and/or drives global exports. A successful application also carries a clear value proposition for the technology, a well-defined life sciences problem with an explanation of why the solution is unique and commercially viable, target market size, team qualifications, evidence the project will catalyze company growth, and a feasible delivery plan.

Intake Periods
Rolling and continuous — submissions accepted year-round with no intake windows. Program funding is available from April 2024 to March 2028.
Deadline Notes
There is no application deadline. SOPHIE accepts submissions continuously and reviews them on a rolling basis. Funding for the program is available from April 2024 to March 2028, and Innovation Factory warns that the review process for project grants may take longer than usual.
